Student Evaluation of Instruction

The only module in Moodle which allows for completely anonymous student participation (even though you are logged into Moodle with your L#) is this Questionnaire Activity, specifically set to anonymous mode, which I have done. Moodle will record a submission "score" of "1" when you submit this survey.  That is all I will know... who completed it and who did not.  I will not be able to match the answers to the students who submitted them. 

If you complete this AND the hybrid class survey by the finals week Thursday 5pm deadline, I will add 1% to your final class grade for the term. I hope you take advantage of this opportunity.

I will post the results of this survey online for all students to review before they take a class with me. Please include comments that will be helpful to me and to those future students.

What did you like about the class?

I liked the way the lectures took the material in the book and added a great deal of depth. I also liked the videos assigned and overall felt like Mr. Escobar cared about the information he was teaching us.
I liked the weekly quizzes and how those were set up. Having the ability to retake quizzes has always seemed like the best way to learn the course material.
Having an instructor that was excited about history made me excited to learn about history.
I enjoy the lectures, they really show Joe's understanding of the material and draw me in.
The way he was open to discussions and idea. I loved Thatcher posted movie posters and had links to the information that was available.
My favorite thing about the class is probably how enthusiastic Mr. Escobar is about this subject. He was always very energetic and into each days work and it really makes a difference in the classroom environment in a positive way!
This class was incredibly comprehensive to U.S. history. Being broken up into domestic and foreign policy was an easy way to keep track of events
This class was actually amazing. Despite having an awful grade (to my standards, because of things going on in my life), I actually did learn a lot. There were some days I was actually excited to make the 50-minute drive to school. The forums and quizzes are balanced exactly how they should be. You can easily tell this class has been fixed and perfected over the years which makes for a fun and effective learning experience.
I liked your enthusiasm you brought to class everyday, as well as the material you provided was always interesting and essential. The mix of lecture, PowerPoint, forums, and extra credit was really nice.
The instructor always made sure the entire class was keeping up with the materials. I enjoyed how everything was on shared on Moodle and stayed updated.
I enjoyed how much spirit Joe put into the class. You can tell that he really enjoys what he teaches.

Lectures are amazing. Love the combination of video, websites, and information combined with the spoken word to keep it engaging, informative and provocative.

Joe was incredibly enthusiastic about the class, it was evident that he loved what he taught, and that carried over to learning. Classes were straight to the point, and didn't go of on irrelevant tangents.
The material, and how the teacher elaborated each material
I have never been interested in History before but this class actually struck my interest and was enjoyable for me.
Joe was very knowledgeable about history and brings a lot of energy which makes class a lot better

I liked the way we had forums so we could discuss different topics in a civil, professional way.
I liked how we analyzed things through several different perspectives. It was interesting to see how even one issue could have so many aspects, some of which might not come to mind immediately.

Joe's overall teaching style and use of Moodle is the perfect example of how all teachers should teach their classes. Not enough teachers at LCC use Moodle or even bother to set it up however, i find it to be an incredibly useful tool that more should benefit from.
I liked that the class didn't push an agenda, I still dont know what side of the spectrum Mr. Escobar is on and thats the way it should be. The class taught factual, historical events, that fell within the period and places of study and did not leave out events in our history that might, make America look bad, or leave things out that may hurt peoples feelings, or that might be uncomfortable to talk about. I thought Mr. Escobar was fair and professional, and I look forward to having him as an instructor in the future.
The lectures were very well presented and the instructor showed an expert level knowledge and enthusiasm for the subject. The lectures were very efficient and informative, The lectures started and ended on time. The materials presented for the lectures, including lectures slides, graphs/charts , and video clips were relevant to the material. Professor was always available for discussion after class, and I gained a lot from talking over the material with him. The syllabus was very organized and accurately reflected the course and deadlines.
How class time was always about the lecture and it wasn't filled with dull pauses.
Forums reminded me of being on facebook and I remembered why i deleted my years ago.

You made history interesting and also the fact it wasn't a 2 hour lecture but a hybrid course.

The thing that I like about the most about Joe's class is how energetic and fast paced it is. There is rarely a moment in class where he is not giving some new information, which makes the class go by quick.

I love history, it has always been my favorite subject and for the most part, I've always been pretty successful in history courses, but for some reason, I always have a hard time with US history. But I think that this was my favorite course I took this term, and I feel like I really improved and grew to really enjoy US history, in your course.
I actually learned and remembered some history facts. I'm not very good at history, so to be able to come home and talk about what I learned is a really good feeling.
I really liked the combination of slides and videos during the lectures. It helped keep the class fresh and interesting and add visuals to text descriptions. I enjoyed the fact that the instructor is so clearly in love with the subject he teaches, and loves teaching it to and being very available for all students to extend their learning.

How could this class be improved? Add any comments about the class and/or instructor that you feel might be helpful or useful.

It might be nice to have some question and answer time during each class, so students can clarify any confusion they may have had while reading the chapter, or ask any questions about course material presented on Moodle.
The lectures could get somewhat boring. Maybe that's just because history isn't really my favorite subject? I don't have the answer as to how, but if there was any way to get the students more involved that might be helpful.
Sometimes the chapter quiz questions were confusing but it's not that big of deal because you could take the quiz more then once and get different questions.
I personally dislike the forums, mainly because I prefer writing essays and dislike how debates devolve into arguments about personal beliefs instead of the subject matter. A good example was during the forum that had the remade political cartoons from WWII and it turned into an argument about consent and sexism.
I believe that being more open would help. As in, working with others one on one and explaining more.

(I'm not writing this to be a kiss-ass, these are my actual thoughts I've had and have told people over the length of this course) Your teaching style is definitely what helped me the most. There was a perfect amount of slides, videos, pictures, etc without any one of them being too extensive or unimportant. Everything we went over was necessary for tests and quizzes with little-none information we did not need. In the long run, I learned (and will most likely retain) 300% more than I thought I would have. As I said, my grade may not be perfectly synced with my response but I truly did learn a lot. You are a great professor, thank you.
Only thing that could be improved is giving better explanations of forums. And update forum grades faster
This class could be improved by maybe becoming a Monday, Wednesday, Friday course because the time slot can feel really long and draining at times.
Im not sure this class can be improved much more. The class seemed fair and the work put in is the ggrade you get

The tests. I got A on just about everything except for a forum post, and the tests. On both the tests I got Ds. Not saying it's not my fault, but when you have 100 questions of multiple choice, it's either easy whether you study or not, or hard, and in Escobar's class it was hard. Test 1 I didn't study at all, D. Test 2 I studied a lot, D. I felt way better on the 2nd test though, but because the multiple choice questions were the way they were, I could misunderstand a question and get 0 credit, versus written questions, where I can show what I've learned however I can, and even if it's not exactly what he's looking for he can still see that I put in the effort and understand some of the topic and award partial credit at least. Overall, great class. Just please change the tests, at least partially.
I think, it can be very helpful if the teacher actually have a conversation with the student. I mean interférante with student in class about the material. No only show up some slide in the board and exiling .
the only thing that could really be improved or added is the study lists for the midterms. They are so big and intimidating its often in hard to make it all the way through them. Perhaps a shorter more doable study list, or at least a seemingly more doable study list. Everything else was perfect the grading of the quizzes was very generous and appreciated
The movie/documentary referrals are great but maybe could they be listed in Moodle so they aren't taking up class time?

Nothing I can think of, definitely best class setup so far.
Nothing, maybe fix the social science program so I can take all 3 of my class with Joe rather than only being allowed 2 with one teacher and the third has to be with another teacher.
I dont know that there is much that can be improved on. The only thing I can think of is maybe breaking it up into two terms, so that way more time can be spent between the early 19th-20th Century and the later 20th Century (1950's forward). Its just a lot of material and I would have enjoyed spending more time getting into more detail, but there is only so much you can do in a 10 week course.
Adding a term-long research paper on a subject covered in the particular course would be a welcome addition to the course material, this essay or research paper would be interesting and add value by allowing the student to explore in greater detail an event or figure of their choice.
Maybe give more notice on forum posts and more time to work on them through the weekend. It could give more time for students to get the full credit on the assignment.

I can not think of any.
I thought the class was great and would not change a thing.
having the lectures be available online for students who complete the work.
Not having the Extra Credit assignments be 90% or better to get any credit, and if you get slightly less you get nothing.
There isn't really anything in particular I'd want to change.
Take a 5 minute break at the middle of class, just so we can refocus for the last part of class.
Maybe simplify the forums, those were a lot of work, still valuable I think though.
The online forums. I don't know what needs to be changed about this, maybe the instructions in the first one, or what. I got so confused on the forums, and just now got the hang of them.
The instructor prides himself on being unbiased, and students apparently can never tell where he lies on the political spectrum. This is interesting because I thought it was pretty obvious where he lies (saying 100 bad things about Obama and nothing good, all the PragerU vids), and I'd just like to say that as a student I appreciate it more when instructors don't attempt to disguise their bias. We all have them, and I enjoy learning from a diverse range of people on the spectrum. Besides this, everything else has been awesome.
