Student Computer Literacy
Hands-On Test
April, 1998

Approach the computer. Name the big pieces.

Identify floppy drive and CD-ROM drive, and name all register keys on keyboard.

Turn computer on. Log on if required to. When boot-up is completed, view folders (directories) on root level of hard drive.

Launch a word processor application and create a new, blank document.

Type two sentences of about five words each. Create a new paragraph. In it, type two more short sentences. (These will be referred to as sentences one through four.)

Within sentence one, insert two words.

Delete one word from sentence two.

Change one word in sentence three to a different word.

Place a duplicate of sentence four between sentences one and two.

Move sentence three into the first paragraph, after sentence one. That is, sentence three should be removed from the second paragraph and placed in the first paragraph, after the first sentence.

Change the font of the first sentence.

Change the type size of the first two words of the second paragraph.

Save your document to a disk and folder specified by your instructor. Then close your document.

Still using the word processor application, open an existing document as indicated. Then close the document.

Minimize the word processor application (Windows), or go to the Finder (Macintosh).

Return to the word processor application and quit (exit) it.

Launch a Web browser. Go to the Shorecrest home page (http://www.shorecrest.org). Use a link to go to the Student Window.

Go to other Web pages as assigned.

Using a standard search engine like Yahoo, Lycos, or Excite, locate Web pages on specified subjects.

Exit the Web browser.

Log onto your ShoreLine account. Create and send a message to your instructor.

Create another message to your instructor, attach a specified file to it, and send the message.

Go the Computer Desk conference and read two messages. Then find a message that has an attachment, and download the attachment to the computer you're sitting at.

Go to another conference and post a message to it.

Go into the Assignments conference and look for the homework assignments of one of your classes.

Quit the ShoreLine client application.

Correctly insert a floppy disk into your computer.

On the hard disk, locate the document you created with the word processor. Copy it onto the floppy disk. (If a security application prevents your doing this the direct way, how else can you accomplish this?)

Eject the floppy disk.

Extra credit: Determine the amount of RAM (memory) installed in the computer. Find the capacity of the hard disk, and the amount of it that is being used.

Go through the steps necessary to turn off the computer correctly.
