HST 202: History of United States W19 (Escobar)

Had a great chat with you right after the midterm to go over the few that I missed. I found you to be one of the more approachable teachers that I have had, and I wish that more students would take advantage of talking with you outside of class. 

I'm usually fairly shy, so unless I am in the danger zone of failing I typically don't seek extra help.

I felt confident from your instructions and expectations that I didn't feel the need to meet during office hours or Moodle message, even on the snow days you were clear and even Made the lecture avaliable online!

Our interactions have been mainly in passing around campus, but you've always been kind and known my name.  You always acknowledge and smile when I "bump" into you.  It's refreshing to know that out of so many students, you still know my first and last name.  I also enjoy our Moodle messaging, it's a nice way to communicate.

I never felt like I needed help or had any questions after class or during office hours. And yes, your presentations in class are really good.

I only spoke with Joe one time all term, but that was because I felt that I could handle the material without aid other than his lecture, which was thorough, and the book.

I did not visit office hours simply because everything the professor said was all straightforward. I am a little shy too when it comes to people who are in control of my grade (just putting it in the computer or something based off of my scores and assignments). Even just one test or one assignment score was low I feel guilty for not doing better, and the teacher knows I didn't do well, so that kind of hinders my motivation to see teachers... Even if I know they won't be mad! If I had a question or trouble in the class, I would Moodle message the professor. Also, I was overall pretty happy with my grade throughout the term compared to my past! 

I never went to office hours, My grade would be better but I got sick an awful lot this term and unfortunately missed quite a bit of class.

I was very busy this term with work, and did not feel like I needed to visit outside of class.

I felt that I was doing well enough in the class and that the lectures were thorough enough that I did not need to meet with you outside of class. My only real concerns were not with the content in the text or the lectures. Perhaps I should have approached you with my real concerns which were over the forums and interacting with other students. You made yourself fully available to us students and informed us of the tutors as well. 

Make a grade incentive. Other teachers have done this and have had a good number of students attend.

Generally, i did not meet with Mr. Escobar because i did not need much extra instruction. Whenever I had questions or concerns, I reached out over Moodle messenger and I got a response very promptly. 

I also lean towards the anti-social side, so i did not make myself as available as i should have. Taking classes in the future, I will make more of an effort to connect with my professors. 

I never felt like Mr. Escobar was unreachable or unapproachable. I very much enjoyed the term and the instruction given in class was always very clear. 

I went and saw Joe a couple of times and he was so helpful in getting me going again. He is very direct and straight to the point, which is great. If any student has any question even if it is little I highly encourage them to do so, it will definitely benefit you. 

I never took advantage of office hours, because I felt the instructor explained things in a way that was easy to follow. 

I never did meet with you in person during office hours because I felt that your lectures were very well oriented and detailed.

Joe always made himself very available to students. I chose not to use the office hours because I felt like the questions I had could be answered in class or I just felt comfortable with the material and didn't have any questions. I'm a pretty shy person and tend to not use teacher's office hours but I know if I needed to Joe would make himself available.

The only time I talked to you after class was this past Tuesday. I was understanding the content and getting good scores already. However, if I had had questions I would've asked because I've seen many other students ask questions during or after class and get helpful answers.

I didn't look into the online office hours but I'm glad I know what that is now. that seems like it would be helpful.

I am incredibly shy and meeting face to face is often very difficult for me. While I can sit in front of a classroom and take notes all day long, communicating without the assistance of the internet puts a huge strain on my ability to function, especially as I go through many transitions in my non-academic career. 

I only visited with you after class once, and that was to make sure my map was all correct. I could tell, based on interactions I saw between you and your other students, that you are a teacher that intends only the best for your students. I really appreciate your thoroughness throughout the term. 

 Well Joe you know me the history Korean nerd who talks to you every time after class. Its a very productive time for me. I learn thing that I didn't in lecture but talking with you I understand better of the material that I study. Especially because I try to match events and dates in Korea or Asian history to the history that I am learning right now and compare and contrast these. I mean you don't need to be a nerd like me but, just asking you for 20~30 minutes after class was more than enough to help me in this course.

I had a family emergency early into the term and the instructor was very understanding and offered me a reasonable deal on the work I had missed.

For the most part, your instructions in class and on moodle were thorough enough I did not need more help. the few times I did I just waited after class and asked the questions then.

I never had an interaction outside of class except a quick question at the end of class. The reason not being because every question I've had was answered in moodle or the syllabus or you cover it in class. The response on moodle messaging was quick as well or you would email us helpful updates that tell us evrything

I did not meet with the teacher but I thought I didn't really have to because a lot of my questions would be answered in class time or by other classmate. I do know that the teacher would be more than willing to help a student with any concerns or questions. 

It was always helpful when we met outside class on your office hours

Im not one to utilize office hours due to the fact that trying to find my teacher after class and have a quick conversation is really how i find to be the most help and allow me to keep up on my own grades but also i have a PE class right after this one and then work at Novo after that which makes it hard to try and find time for meeting with a teacher for office hours. i know how helpful it can be and i have utilized it with previous classes/ teachers

I mostly did not approach you because I'm shy and I struggle with anxiety and find myself intimidated by basically everyone. I find it hard to talk to anyone that I do not know well. The presentations and readings were thorough though and did not really need any extra help.

Professor Escobar was always available after class to talk about the lecture(of that day or previous), any questions we had, and the course in general. His lectures and directions for homework/tests were very clear and without any trick questions. I was able to have a very engaged and thought out discussion with him about the Native American's(present day and past), and the problems they faced along with controversies about them. His information was always to the point and removed as much as possible from personal bias. 

I worked two jobs this term and didn't have a lot of time in-between classes to talk to professors. It didn't have anything to do with your office hours. I never once felt like I couldn't come to you with questions if I ever had any. Your presentations during class were always very thorough and I appreciated this because I didn't have much "study-time" outside of class.

It was very easy to access these things. Joe would put them on a table and write on the whiteboard drawing an arrow and labeling what they were.

VERY EASY. If you didn't get the maps in class when they were sitting out everyday for 3 weeks straight or somehow didn't see where you could print them off moodle then you were asleep.

The in-class materials were easy to come by because I came to class every day, but I understand that they were provided online as well. Some of the videos were slow in loading just because of their size, but images weren't a problem. Some of the links to external sites didn't work because my school computer has Securly and blocked the pages, but that didn't occur often.

They did nothing but help me even more than the lectures did. I say that they were important!

Very Easy until the snow week and then it was no connection or avlibility to try and contact our teachers. but i found online hw and Moodle forms to be a lot of fun. i kinda wish we could have expanded our moodle conversations in groups in class as well.

Last quarter I missed out on 5 points for never getting around to uploading a profile pic to my Moodle page. This quarter I made sure I got those 5 points, even if I never figured out how to rotate my photo so I'm not sideways. Maybe these don't seem too important to students in the beginning of the quarter and it doesn't really make an impact on them until the end when they see how it affected their final grade.

I myself was able to complete the quizes and opinion polls without an issue. I think these "gift" assignments are very helpful for people who actually take the time to do them, and they very much helped my grade. I think even though some choose not to participate I don't think this should be a deterrent towards using them in the future. I think the benefits for the students who do the work outweighs the deficit brought by those who don't participate.

I think they were very easy points to earn and the deadlines were very cleat and consistent there aren't that many excuses to have missed all of them, I personally really liked the way the class was set up 

computer quizzes are an easy 20 percent I believe.

I think it is a gift.  Although I was late on one quiz due to a medical illness during the week of the snowstorm, this is the easiest way to succeed.  It's not difficult and certainly the easiest part of the course (along with attendance).

I liked the quizzes. I liked how you could take them as many times as you wanted, and even if you got a passing grade you could continue taking them for practice. I did fail to get a high enough grade on one of the quizzes though because I waited until the last minute to read the chapter and take the quiz, but that's all on me.

In the start of the term, I was one of the students who forgot to do the second quiz and the polls. I was not in the routine of checking Joe’s frequent emails on my lane email, so I would advise future students to check their Lane email every day if the don’t already, when taking this course.

These points were too easy to earn. The quizzes are all multiple choice and to get an "A" all you had to get was an 14/20. With almost a failing midterm grade, the quizzes and opinion polls that I completed maintained my overall grade at a B.

I think that the "gift" was indeed helpful, the quizzes were imperative as a study tool for myself. I take notes and I listen to lectures but the quizzes being unlimited helped me comb through the book if I was unsure about a question. The polls were interesting and informative and nice segue in class into the lecture for the day. 

They're easy assignments. Free points. Anyone who doesn't take advantage isn't doing it right..

I appreciated the way that quizzes and polls were graded. I tend to be a procrastinator and having things due throughout the week actually really kept me on track. As long as you do the assignments, the grading is really helpful and makes it hard to fail. I like that because you do not always have to be PERFECT to receive a good grade. 

I was one of those students that missed one of those polls which was in the very beginning of the term and I never made that mistake again. These are so helpful because on the midterm and final exam the first 20 questions are taken from the tests!

"Gift" or not, if you're not going to do the homework, you're not going to do the homework.

I finished all of the quizzes online and on time. I don't see a reason for that not being possible for students unless they did not have internet access outside of class.

I did all of the quizzes and poll because honestly, they take maybe 30 min max for the quizzes and maybe 2 min for the polls. I signed up for this class to learn and do the work, I may not have studied and spent as much time on this class as I should have but when a teacher basically hands you the points on a silver platter and all you have to do is take them it doesn't make any sense to not take them.

I tried to take advantage of the gift assignments. For the computer quizzes, I often tried to get more than a C- just for my own personal satisfaction. 

Even if someone doesn't have access to the book (my case) the library offered them and the information on the quiz questions was as simple as looking up a name and reading over a Wikipedia article. I genuinely loved the quizzes. I do very badly at them (as I am training myself in memorization, so I can retain information better) but I found them to be a useful study tool, especially for the midterm. 

I think that I took those for granted and didn’t always make a note to myself to get those done. Those polls are a great way to weed out the students that arent as on top of their schoolwork as they should be. 

 I mean you can just do these online assignment just by using the library computers. Its not we are busy that we can't make time its that we are using our time poorly.

I loved the quiz rules and loved that even if you got 14/20 you would get all the points. I definitely have to say that I would really like to see more opinion polls on topics we are studying and then discussing them in class. I will probably be taking another course with you and I'd want to have more polls. I'd want them even if they didn't offer points at all.

No reason that students shouldn't. The quizzes are not only a "gift: but are beneficial to understanding the material.

I believe it was easy to tale and pass the weekly quizzes but also very informative and also a helpful study tool for the mid term and final exam.

The computer quizzes may seem like they aren't that big of a deal but they are and it is very easy to earn an A. It on;y takes up about 30-40 minutes of your time and it is useful to look back on them for exams and just for overall knowledge. 

Do the work easy and worth it

I actually missed the first quiz and talked to you about it you said if i don't miss a single quiz you would give me back the points for quiz 11 and i was able to do so easily with 20/20 on most of them so i would just say the other half of class where just lazy cus i was able to do it easily weeks in advance along with form posts. 

I liked the online quizzes and opinion polls. They were easy grades that I think should be kept in future classes. It was basically a gift grade.

Any hurt this "gift" may cause is completely on those students. We were given more then enough time to complete the assignments and to learn the materials(both in class and outside). This should and is an easy way to earn 20%of our overall grade. I also found it really helpful to take a quiz outside of class with the ability to take it many times if need be, so that I could see what I needed to study more.

I find the online forums to be a crucial part for this course, as students have limited opportunities to engage in class. In my opinion their format and materials are very well put together and for me personally at least, they were successful in providing me many more opportunities to engage in a deeper discussion about the material being covered. Maybe some students misjudge this class to be an easy A and don't expect to put in the amount of time outside the classroom that is required to pass this course.

I think the forums are helpful and make up a fair portion of the grade. I myself didn't complete all of them but this was due to my own choice and really doesn't reflect the quality of the forum itself. For the forums I did participate in I found the information was generally quite interesting and had me engaged with the information that learned myself and from other students.

I liked the forums - I felt a little intimidated at first but then the more I did them the more comfortable I felt! 

Interesting materials and I liked having different subjects to discuss rather than just one. 

it was hard sometimes to respond to people who wrote a full page plus for one post I did not even want to read them let alone respond to. I think to make the post a paragraph or two is the best length but it was a little difficult to respond to those post if someone already responded.

It's important to post often, this ensures an easy A for this part of the class.  It's worth the time and the effort, and the engagement helps to see issues from differing points of view.  This provokes thoughtful contemplation of the material.

I could've done more to interact throughout the weeks, I mostly made an initial post and then waited until the last night to reply to a few more posts. I don't know about other people, but online assignments I feel like are less-motivating to complete in general.

I really enjoyed the forums because they allowed me to say what I thought, in an environment that was less intimidating, and then allow me to see what others thought in my group and get a better perspective on our topic, if I had any confusion. I was fortunate to have a good group for all the posting, so there was a lot of thoughtful information, some of which I didn’t think of, helping to clarify. For future students, if you schedule a designated time everyday to post, you won’t forget to do it, and your grade will thank you.

I didn't do too well on the forums, but I really liked that there were multiple choices for topics that you could choose from, that really helped.

the feed back I have for future students is to just if you think theres nothing you can write to respond to someone else then write on another part of the question or evaluate on your own question or say that you agree with someone and why you agree with them I guess 

It is fair like the quizzes. 

Most of the forums felt like there was too little reward for a genuine effort.

My concerns were not with the forums material to post from, my concerns were that having to have a "discussion" with other students. If we all are posting and some as you say only post once or never, then who are we really having a discussion with? If the information in someone else's posts are not differing from your own and you go in to have a conversation with that other student it really just comes across as a nod in agreeance and no real depth to add to what was already said. I also find it difficult to compose as you suggested long posts on google docs on my phone. I work and go to school, I also have multiple other assignments in these classes. I have to be wise about my time. If im waiting around until after work late in the evening for others to post on these forums then its a pain to add to a discussion and it mean anything and carry any weight. Some things that require opinion were easier to comment on but I found the amount of times needed to contribute to the conversation was excessive. This class is a challenging class which is good and truly interesting, the hybrid part of it is not my favorite part of it though. 

Forums can be very confusing when you have more than one Hybrid course. Different due dates only exacerbates the problem.

I am on both ends of the spectrum; I failed the first forum but did well on the rest. It really boils down to doing the work. The topics were interesting and relevant and we were given choices of topics, so you could post about something that interested you. The materials were very manageable and sometimes just required looking at a cartoon and reflecting on it. The deadlines are important, or else someone like me (who procrastinates) would not have posted at all. The grading scale seemed fair and the topics changed and kept things fresh. 

All and all, I liked the forums. It was fun to discuss with classmates and be able to think about your response, instead of talking on the spot in the classroom. i would keep this activity in the curriculum as I felt like it was a good way to apply the knowledge gained in class.  

At first it was very confusing but after I went and talked to you made it very clear on what to do. I just do not understand the grading portion of it.

This is the most challenging part of the class, but I think it is crucial to understanding the subject. 

Not much information on what we were specifically supposed to write about in the forums. We had topics, but not much instruction.

I loved being able to pick from a few topics to talk about. If you didn't understand or didn't like something you could go and pick a different topic. I especially loved the political cartoons. However, it was very frustrating to see people comment half thought out things and then not even bothering to reply when people ask them about their comments. It was very easy to tell who the lazy people were and there were many people that didn't even analyze the cartoons they just put their opinion in one sentence. It is frustrating to be the only one talking in the forum but I felt like the forums made you analyze the material in more detail (that is if you actually participate). Word of advice to future students - take the forums seriously, you signed up for this class so act like you're in it. Do not be that person that comments one sentence or say "wow that was interesting" 700 times. If you join a HYBRID class, expect there to be online work.

I liked the forums that dealt with a yes/no issue because for me that was easier than something completely open-ended. I aced this activity by making sure I posted at least 5 times on each forum. Mathematically, I figured that even one 2 and four 1's would give me an A+. So I think that as you said, continual participation throughout the week is key. Forum 4 was a bit scary at first because it a lot of reading attached to it.

If group size was made smaller, it might lead to more focused and meaningful discussions. At the same time though, it could also hinder participation because of a smaller number of replies and fewer opinions.

My advice for future students is to just write, write, write! Check your grammar, check your spelling, and also, don't be afraid to include outside sources. Can't remember the direct quote Joe had about Chinese and their depiction in 1800s comics? Look up hairstyles in China, racism in Chinese portrayals, and Asian Americans during the gold rush. Can't figure out how to sum up the whole comic? Choose to analyze just a part of it. The forums were very open ended.

Also, I appreciated the options in it. I could talk about whatever interested me instead of being forced to study just one part, and I could talk without feeling like I was going to die or start sweating. When you have anxiety it can be really hard to speak up in class, so I found that this a safe space to share my thoughts and read what others thought. I always liked helping people expand their horizons, too. 

The forum posting is a great way to get students to discuss issues with one another. I think that the last forum had a couple too many materials to read in order to fully understand the subject. I was not a huge fan of the first post deadline as well. I think you should consider added another forum, just to keep them constant throughout the term. 

 I mean I think 4 forums for a 10 week class is very good enough for me. When I am in the UO we used to have discussions very week. And the forums are pretty much free and easy to do for me. Like I said if you just think a little you can do this easy.

The forums were a bit tricky for me. A lot of students really nailed their posts and I felt like my posts were not up to that level. I should have participated more and studied on the topics harder, but I had 4 class loads of work. Not an excuse, just my reasoning. I do think they are beneficial to the class and offer shy students a way to speak their mind. However, if I'm being completely honest, most of the topics weren't exactly all that interesting. I understand that it is hard to relate the 19th century to teenagers and young adults, so I don't blame the instructor.

Its an easy yet effecting assignment that teaches students and also allows students to receive feedback from there peers. The group size does need to be expanded because few participate and give feedback in small forums.  

It was hard sometimes because I would forget about them or miss the deadline to post but if you just keep a schedule it could really help you keep caught up. It was worth my time because a lot of that stuff is on the exams and it is just important to know.

I loved writing about the cartoons and found myself leaning twords those options every time they were a possibility, i also found the videos to be fun watches and easy ways to feel like i was going to be able to be a little bit ahead or understand what you will be talking about in the coming class due to the reading and the videos which i feel was a great blend to help me when i felt existed of one i could just flip flop to the other. n

I did not participate in a few online forums. I found them hard to do since I am quite shy. When I did do them, it triggered my anxiety a lot. I would have personally preferred just writing 1-3 page opinion papers on the topics. I thought some of the topics and materials were interesting, but I could not find interest in them all. I think that is mostly due to the fact that the most interesting part of history to me is the 1900s. I did appreciate having the choice between what topic to do, and I thought they were scored fairly.

It was really helpful that the materials for the forums was easy to access and the questions of the forum were clear. It was also helpful that there was a deadline for the forum and they contained very interesting and in my mind important topics. They were definitely worth all the time and effort. 

Interesting and relevant materials

I keep accidentally signing up for hybrid classes without realizing I'm doing it. I would've preferred not being in a hybrid class but I stuck with it. With forums I feel uncomfortable sharing my thoughts with the other students. I'm fine if the teacher knows I'm stupid but I don't want other students to know. I did the work for one of the forums but I never posted it. I also would miss the first deadline for posting and felt discouraged about posting to it late. 

I was grateful that you were able to make the material available to us. I wonder how many students weren't able to access it do to losing power and wifi for so long. For my calculus class we weren't even able to do any homework that week because moodle was down and we used an OER for this term. However, I was able to access the online lectures and found them enjoyable, but I do enjoy the in-class lectures more, because your enthusiasm and passion for the material is much more apparent.

The online lectures were fine and conveyed all the information that was necessary. But I still prefer in person lectures, I think the experience is more engaging and there are less chances for distraction compared to working at home.

Yes I watched and took notes on both lectures - I found it a little easier to take notes just cuz I could pause it but I always feel more invested and less distracted when Im in class 

The in class lectures were more beneficial to me over the online but given the circumstances it was okay.

I was sick this week, so it was a blessing and a curse.  It was frustrating to miss class in person, but it would have happened anyways.  It was harder for me to focus online.  In-person works much better for me.

I like how you posted online versions of the lectures, it felt pretty natural to me. And I did like how you could pause the video to jot down notes here and there, vs. being rushed to write something down before you miss something the subject changed.

I feel like during that snow week it was hard to focus on the online information provided. There was a big difference between a face to face lecture and reading and watching it all online. I strugggled to retain that weeks information a little because of my “at home” environment.

I prefer in-class lectures, so this snow week was harder for me. Worth your time for sure because that was what you were going to learn in class and you have to learn it yourself.

I honestly like them being posted online. If you were to do both in future classes I think that would be helpful and perhaps would increase scores on quizzes and exams. Not every student is going to learn the same or take great notes from a lecture. Having the ability to look at the content online after the class period would be a helpful addition to this course.

At this point (3/14) I have not looked at the online lectures, but I most likely will before the final. I would prefer just being in class for the lectures, as I liked the system of reading the chapter and coming in to class for the lecture that would provide more in-depth info on the chapter topic. I do think it is really helpful to post those lectures though. It is better than being pushed back a whole week in class, or skipping the material all together.

As we all know, a lot of us had power outages and on top of that moodle was down but in all of that, I did not get around to looking at it. But I did have to read that chapter and take the tests.

I prefer class lectures, but I appreciate the time and effort it took to add the lectures to moodle. 

I preferred the in class lectures compared to the online lectures during the bad weather, but they were still very helpful since we couldn't meet for class.

I prefer to be in class rather than to make myself watch videos at home. In class, you feel obligated to listen but at home, it's hard for me to stare at my computer for an hour and a half. That being said, if you miss a class, watch the videos, look at the powerpoints. You'll thank me later

I didn't view the entirety of the Tuesday lecture and I didn't look at the Thursday lecture at all. From what I did listen too, I like the in-class experience better. This could just be me because the rest of my classes are all online. I wasn't expecting something like that and I wish I had looked at those more than I did.

I absolutely loved these. I went to both of these lectures, and I could pause and go research something that I didn't quite understanding and get an answer right away. It offered an equal experience and it made me really want to take a course like this again.

I am not a fan of online classes. I am not able to succeed in them. I really enjoy the in-class lectures that we have. I was not able to go on Moodle for a good amount of time due to the weather. I did not enjoy being stressed about forum posting. Overall, I would much rather be in class taking notes. 

I liked the online lectures I was like a podcast to me. I think Joe if you think something was missing in class or you think this is important to learn it would be so good to have like a 20 minute small lecture about them in like once every 2 week in the term. I don't personally like full online lectures and would prefer a hybrid or full in person class that being said I believe the way you handledI  the snow week was good and the best you could do.

I did like the lectures because it was helpful when studying and preparing for exams. When taking notes, it keeps you engaged and aware of what is going on in class. 

I really appreciated the material online gave me a different take and  I took information in a little better than in class.

I loved it, helped me catch up vaguely fast it was just due to the lane servers being down for so long i couldn't access the website till friday or saturday but was happy to feel like i didn't fall behind all of a sudden. 

I did not go through the online lectures. I work long shifts when I am not in class so I just did not find the time and when I did have the time, I could not access wifi. I work better in classroom settings so I prefer that over online lectures. I am just too easily distracted when I do have time at home.

I did the online lecture and it was helpful to learn the necessary materials for class but overall I liked the in class lectures more. I felt that the in class lectures were better then online lecture, however the online lecture was extremely valuable and worth the time. 

The online lectures were very helpful during that time and I did like the fact that I could pause and write down the notes. I also believe in-class lectures were important as well. I believe they are both beneficial. 

Yeah I went through the online lectures and they were a good alternative option for classes due to the snow. It took awhile though because of the slow wifi. I like having lectures in person. It allows for the professor to add side notes on whatever we're going over.  I also have limited access to a computer at home and don't enjoy staring at a computer screen. If the material that was in the online lecture is on the final than yes, it is a good use of time. 

I enjoyed this textbook quite a lot. I also really like how it was used to add to the lectures in class, like when information from previous editions is compared to our current one. I rented this book for the past two terms, but have been thinking of buying it just because it's a good History resource and I like owning those.

We certainly got a lot of use out of the book, but I didn't feel like it was too much. Though the reading assignments were a little more than I was used to they really weren't too overbearing, due to having many days to complete the assignment. Overall I was happy with how the book was used in this course.

I found it on amazon and rented it for a reasonable price. and for the fact that we actually USED the textbook for the class. So many teachers pointlessly make you buy books you don't even need. And I found the textbook very detailed and I liked how they went along with the lectures

Joe would make reminders in the lesson and connect them back to the book and point out where the authors did a good job in his opinion and what they could improve upon.

I like the textbook, but it's sometimes too much information to retain.  I learn more from the class lectures due to the variety of audio, video, and instruction. 

I actually enjoyed reading the textbook, it didn't feel boring to me. And the instructor did a great job incorporating the textbook, while also adding useful information and insight. For some classes it feels like you don't even need the professor because they just repeat everything the textbook says, but not Joe.

I personally am a slow reader AND it is hard for me to comprehend what I read. So the required readings of these chapters were difficult for me. It was never a problem though because we covered the main points in class and I understood what was taught every time I left the class. Definitely need to have this textbook to pass and to keep up with the course.

A chapter a week was not unreasonable. The textbook was formatted nicely and readability was not difficult. If someone was to pace themselves to read specific sections throughout the week then I do believe it would be beneficial. I'm unsure about the quizzes and reading being required before the week discussing the chapter. If you are having to read and take a quiz on the information before hearing a lecture over it seems backwards, seeing as you would need to read the chapter during the week that the previous chapters content is being lectured about in class. Overall though the cost and use of the textbook was great and the information was retainable from the chapters themselves.

I did okay on the midterm without reading much of the text, but I was stressed going into the exam. For the second half of the course I read every chapter assigned and it added so much to my understanding of the material. It made the lectures in class much more enjoyable because I had an idea of what we would be covering and it helped connect the dots between what I read and what we heard in the lecture. I am also feeling pretty confident going into the final. 

The reading is very dense and it is hard to sit down and read a whole chapter at once, but very much worth it. The book was also fairly expensive and there was no used copies (what I usually buy) when I went to purchase my book. I think, other than the quizzes, you could pass the course without the text, but I also feel it added an extra layer of understanding.

It was a lot of reading! But I did like the textbook and It was a good source of facts. It was also somewhat easy to find key definitions in this book.

Sometimes the reading felt like a lot during the forum weeks, but I don't think it's an unreasonable work load. 

The textbook was useful, but the chapters were just so long and hard to get read on time with other classes and work outside of school.

I couldn't afford the textbook so I had to rent older editions from the library. While they were basically the same I still missed out on a lot of information. That being said a textbook is a great tool and while the chapters are long, read them. "Reading" does not mean no homework and I can't stress that enough.

The quality of the textbook was very good, and the incorporation was very good as well. Sometimes the textbook was a bit hard to read because I tried to retain every remotely important detail, enough to get more than a 14 on the chapter quizzes.

The textbook did a great job of explaining everything that we needed to know without going into too much detail. I never had a problem reading the material, but that might be because I enjoy history. I would say that you should continue to use this textbook. 

 The textbook is interesting but, it needs some break downs of the materials that the book covers. I think thats where the lectures come in.

The textbook contained a huge amount of great information and I felt great about buying it. I did feel like the chapters were long and it quickly stacked on top of me.

As far as a history textbook goes, it was readable.

I felt as if it was a little to much to read and maybe sliming down a couple pages and giving students specific pages to read in the chapter.

Awesome class and well worth the term 

I enjoyed the textbook but found that some chapters with longer reads lead to me re reading the same page multiple times trying to figure out or get my brain to digest the information. however the books use of political cartoons and information throughout it i found to be a very enjoyable and useful source of knowledge. 

I thought the text book was very readable and seemed to be pretty high quality. The longer time period chapters were a bit harder to read. I think the instructor incorporated the textbook just the right amount.

The textbook was clear and I had no issues with it. any questions I had about the material were answered in the class lectures. The textbook was successfully incorporated into the lectures and was vital to the class.

Joe is an excellent Instructor. He is enthusiastic and passionate about his subject and it makes his class extremely enjoyable. It is not an easy A though. There are about 30-40 pages of reading every week that are necessary to stay on top of, and 4 online forums that require continuous participation and informed, well-written posts that use information from the textbook/in class/other sources. If you enjoy learning about History this is the best class there is at Lane, if you're looking for an easy A in a History class, not this one.

I think the instructor was great. All the history teachers I've had at Lane seemed very passionate and excited about their work this was no exception. Classes were always taught efficiently and clearly, and I never had an issue understanding the lectures I attended live. Always gave clear instruction on what was expected of the class, and always had time to help with any questions or confusion in the lecture.

I would definitely recommend it! I took history 203 last term and was excited to have you as an instructor again. I would let them know that the class is most enjoyable if you actually go to class and make sure to meet the forum deadlines

To take it, the instructor is very knowledgeable and makes it interesting. 

I would highly recommend them to take it Joe did a great job and is one the best history teacher's I had.

I would advise any student (willing to do the work) to take this class.  It's engaging, challenging, and comprehensive.  

It would really depend on who asked. I can see some of my friends not liking this course (in fact, one of my friends took the class and she didn't really enjoy it). If they're someone who's interested in history, or if they're someone who enjoys reading, I'd definitely recommend it.

I would say that they should take this course because it is easy to get a good grade if you put in the required effort and remember to go online and post in the forums, take the quizzes, and watch the videos.

I would say yes! As I said in the class evaluations, I have learned more in these 10 weeks than I ever did in high school. Even with my grades and motivation from the past, which were not good, I still did better in this course than I ever thought I would! And I actually retained the information I was taught. The enthusiasm the professor has also played a huge part in my interest and motivation to attend!

I really liked Joe and would recommend him.

If they are a strong student then yes I would recommend that they take you as an instructor. If they are not a strong student then no I do not believe I would recommend you to them. I have an opinion that you as an instructor are underutilized at Lane and that your level of expectations and standards you hold on the class would be better utilized at a university. Your experience and effort you put in to your curriculum is not what I've encountered at Lane in other courses. If the student is a really good student and can handle the expectations and standards of whats required of them then I think it would be a great course for them. I would 100% recommend you as an instructor.  

Joe Escobar is definitely the way to go.

I would say Mr. Escobar is an instructor that cares about what he does, is very in depth, and is straightforward in his teaching style. I would probably mention the included pictures of travel to historical sites and the inclusion of family anecdotes, as I really appreciate that.

I would also say there is a lot of reading and there is no way around it, but that I enjoyed the course fully.

ABSOLUTELY! I loved this class. I love how passionate Joe is and I felt like we got to know him on a personal level. He has a great sense of humor and it such a nice person. I took this class because it was recommended by a friend and while the class is a lot of work it really was worth it. 

I would recommend this course. It has challenged some of my views, but that is part of the learning process and I think I am better off for it.

If you can't attend classes, or don't enjoy forums and quizzes, don't take Joe's class. 

If you want a fun teacher who actually likes what he's teaching and wants to talk all day long about history, take his class. You will never find a professor that is as good as teaching, as thoughtful and caring about his students, and as knowledgable and passionate. Also, it was the only class I didn't pass out in entirely. I attended one class where I hadn't slept well the night before and kept scolding myself for dozing off in such an interesting lecture!

”Of course you should take this class! It is a great way of learning about out nation‘s history, not just through the news media we have today. Mr. Escobar‘s cut and dry teaching style to some may be too much, but that’s just because they aren’t used to teachers that actually want their students to succeed/know the material. Take this class, understand the history of where you come from, and thank me later.“

 I would say that if you like history and like to learn the nerdy history facts of course you should take this course.However, if you don't like history this might be boring but, this is a important course really.

I would tell them to take it but be ready for a high workload. The instructor lets you know from day 1 that you will be given lots of work so it is their choice after that. Mr. Escobar is a great teacher and both cares and is extremely knowledgeable about the information he teaches.

Id say yes, hes a great teacher, cares about the subject, is always available, and gives the right amount of work to do in a week and not overwhelm students but also teach them a lot of history. 

I would say to take this class. It was informative and I learned a lot. Heavy on lectures and notes so if you don't like that then this probably isn't the class for you but this was just the right fit for me.

Joes the best teacher who will teach you the facts how it is with no bull, he will make you laugh and enjoy going to his class everyday. He is a one of a kind teacher and you would b dumb to waste your time going to school here and not taking a class with him. 

I would suggest this specific instructor. He was very well educated and passionate about what he was teaching. I just would recommend a more traditional setting since the forums were really not my thing.

I would tell them that they should definitely take the class with Joe Escobar. I personally love his teaching style and he removes personal bias the majority of the time, except when necessary to show different viewpoints. The lectures and readings had all the necessary material for the assignments and were easy to access.

I wouldn't recommend it. I've taken other professors at lane for history classes and they were easier. Why take a class that has more work and is harder than an easier one for the same amount of credits. The other class I felt educated me on history on the same level this class did and was more enjoyable workwise.

I used a site called quizlet to create my own flashcards for each chapter. This seems similar to StudyBlue so I'm not sure if is any help.

I downloaded the Moodle app so it could send me notifications whenever something was posted or announced..It helped me stay on top of things better

I like the ability to import important due dates into my calendar through Google.  I think flashcards would be nice since we're already online.  The Final Exam study list along with the sessions for Finals week (I personally think we should have one mid-term Q & A with you) add greatly to the course.

Quizlet is something I use to study and it helps so much. Flashcards are the best way to learn something and learn it fast too! Quizlet makes quizzes and tests and games to help you learn.

I am not as web-savvy as other students. If there was an expectation to utilize something online in a way I was unfamiliar with and a clear understanding of how to use it then It would be helpful for learning and studying historical information.

The only thing I did was stream "The Divided Union" through the browser on my XBOX so I could watch the movie on my TV instead of my laptop. I kind of made it into a movie night for me and my roommate and it was fun. It made the film more enjoyable sharing it with someone and we both learned something. 

The announcements over email were great and I got every one of them, these were very helpful.

I got my notifications through my Lane email, which I check regularly. I watch Crash Course US History to supplement what I'm learning on occasion, but that's the only thing I have to recommend.

I use Tumblr as a method of learning, actually. I'm studying Family Planning, so a lot of blogs on there were incredibly fun and insightful. I didn't discover a lot of great Tumblrs for 1800s history alone, but there are a lot of entertaining and educational resources on the site for all kinds of history if you look in the right places. 

There’s an app you can get on your phone called “LINE.” On this app you can send out group messages, put events into the calender, and remind people of important deadlines. This might be a cool implementation into your future classes!

I changed my email to give updates I could see on my phone screen that allowed me to get important emails from teachers to learn whats new and whats due.

The only thing I did was set my email/moodle account to alert me when I god a message/email. I found it helpful because I could easily see any deadlines or messages for Professor Escobar.

I think this course works quite well. I think it would have been cool if we could have had a small amount of time each week to discuss and lecture on that weeks forum live in class. I personally find I learn better in lecture, and this would have helped me feel a little better about how the forums were going.

My primary concern is on the textbook. I did not use it, and do not like that courses require expensive books when the information contained is free.

I'm unfamiliar if you have an assistant, I know that there is a tutor though. If you were to have an assistant (possibly a work study) that could also communicate with students and encourage them where they are slacking, possibly even interjecting in the forums to spark more discussion by posing questions to posts it may be helpful. The course is very thought out and your curriculum is definitely notable on how much pride you take in it. I'm not personally a fan of a hybrid course but this is only because of my personal and college life being full already and time stretched thin. For a student that can devote more time to online discussion and interaction as well as in class and maintain their other courses being taken I think it is wonderful and a strong course. 

None were forgotten.

I sometimes felt like it was come to class, hear the lecture, and leave. It might have been nice to include some more in-class discussion to build more of a community in the classroom. I didn't talk to any of my classmates all term, other than on forums. 

All-and-all, I really enjoyed the term and came away with a lot more knowledge than I started with.

I honestly don't think there is much to improve in this course. This was my first hybrid course and I felt that it flowed very well.

While I liked this textbook it would be nice if there was a cheaper option.

I think that last term there was a question concerning overall grade breakdown that wasn't on this questionnaire.

More online polls, it added a real life aspect to the things we learned. I also really liked how you started out the class with a controversial topic (the second amendment). It did confuse me that we did 2 polls in the first week, but then none. I would try adding other activities online that can offer both points and practice for the students. Things that take 10-20 minutes to complete are the easiest for me because they're not too long and overwhelming, but can also be worthwhile. I cannot emphasize how effective the online pre-midterm/final quizzes are. I would take the quizzes before the test, check my answers, then go and take the test and see the same questions with the answers I had learned.
