About GroupWise Check

To keep GroupWise® operating efficiently, you should periodically perform maintenance tasks. You have three options for performing maintenance:

Why Use GroupWise Check Outside of ConsoleOne?

GroupWise Check provides opportunities not provided by Mailbox/Library Maintenance in ConsoleOne.

Running GroupWise Check from a Batch File

On Windows*, the GroupWise Check program is located in the admin\utilities\gwcheck directory on the GroupWise Administrator CD or in your GroupWise software distribution directory if it has been updated. It might also be installed along with the GroupWise Windows client software in the gwcheck subdirectory of the client installation directory.

You can create a batch file to execute GroupWise Check using the following syntax:

gwcheck /opt=options_file /batch

On Linux*, the GroupWise Check RPM is located in the /admin directory on the Linux GroupWise Administrator CD.

After you have installed GroupWise Check, you can create a script to execute GroupWise Check using the following syntax:

/opt/novell/groupwise/gwcheck/bin/gwcheck  --opt=options_file  --batch

Creating an options file is explained later in this topic.

Running GroupWise Check on a User Workstation

On Windows, depending on how GroupWise Check is installed, users might have a Repair Mailbox item on the GroupWise Windows client Tools menu that enables them to run GroupWise Check from the client. If the GroupWise Check program is available to users, users can perform database maintenance on their Remote, cached, and archive mailboxes, which are not accessible from ConsoleOne.

On Linux, users can install the GroupWise Check RPM on their workstations in order to perform database maintenance on their Remote, cached, and archive mailboxes, which are not accessible from ConsoleOne.

GroupWise Check Main Window

The GroupWise Check window is divided into several sections, similar to Mailbox/Library Maintenance in ConsoleOne. The maintenance tasks available depend on the combinations of databases and options you select.

Database Type
Post Office

Select Post Office to perform maintenance on databases located in a post office. Specify the path to the post office directory and the name of the post office.

Remote/Caching

Select Remote/Caching to perform maintenance on a Remote mailbox or cached mailbox on a user workstation that is not currently connected to the network.

Archive

Select Archive to perform maintenance on the local database where messages and other items have been archived.

Object Type

If you select a database type of Post Office, you can also select an object type. If you select a database type of Remote/Caching or Archive, the object type of User/Resource is automatically selected for you.

Post Office

Select Post Office to perform maintenance on all databases in the post office specified above. Use the Databases tab to select specific types of database to check.

User/Resource

Select User/Resource to perform maintenance for a specific user or resource in the post office specified above. Specify the name of the user or resource. Use the Databases tab to select specific types of databases to check.

Library

Select Library to perform maintenance for a specific library in the post office specified above. Specify the name of the library.

Action

Select the action to perform. The available actions depend on the database type and object type you have already selected.

Analyze/Fix Databases

Detects and optionally repairs damage to GroupWise databases.

Expire/Reduce Messages

Eliminates expired messages and reclaims free space in databases.

Mailbox Statistics

Collects statistics regarding the contents of databases, such as the number, age, and size of messages. This reveals the items that would be affected by a corresponding Expire/Reduce Messages action.

Reset Client Options

Resets client options for GroupWise users to the settings specified in ConsoleOne using Tools > GroupWise Utilities > Client Options.

Re-create User Database

Rebuilds a user database and recovers available information. Some information might be lost. This option is designed for resolving severe problems, such as the accidental deletion of a user database when no backup copy is available.

Structural Rebuild

Rebuilds a user database and reclaims free disk space. However, this option does not recover database contents.

Analyze/Fix Library

Detects and optionally repairs damage to GroupWise libraries.

Archive/Delete Documents

Reduces the disk space consumed by libraries by deleting or archiving documents based on document properties established in the library.

Delete Activity Logs

Reduces the disk space consumed by libraries by deleting the activity logs that record user activity for documents in the library.

Audit Report

Shows the type of license ( or limited client) required for each mailbox in a post office. Also shows if a mailbox is active or inactive.

Options File

You can save your options in an options file, and later retrieve them to save time the next time you run GroupWise Check. You must create an options file if you want to run GroupWise Check from a batch file.

Save

Click Save, then specify a file name to create a new options file for later use.

Retrieve

Click Retrieve, then browse to and select an options file to retrieve options you previously saved.

Tab Options

Tab options vary depending on the action you select.

Databases

Select the specific types of database to perform maintenance on.

Logging

Specify a log file name and optionally select verbose logging. GroupWise Check logging reports what actions were taken and any problems encountered during processing.

Results

Set up e-mail notification to users concerning the results of performing the database maintenance.

Misc

Run GroupWise Check with specialized options typically used only by Novell Support.

Exclude

Select users to exclude from the processing. For example, if you are expiring and reducing mailboxes, you might choose not to perform that action on the mailbox of the president of your company.
