Close to officially recognizing the Confederacy, the main issue that brought Britain against the South was slavery itself. Englishmen had already ended slavery in their own country in 1833, and prided themselves in their role in suppressing the transatlantic slave trade. In addition, the Union victory at Antietam made Britain wary of joining to help a losing side in a civil war.{TRUE} One deceptive tactic used by the Confederacy, to compensate for their constant shortages when facing Union troops in battle, was the creation of the Quaker Gun, made out of logs painted black to resemble cannons. Unfortunately for them, this crude hoax never worked. Union Generals such as George McClellan were too well-trained and knowledgeable to ever let themselves be taken in by such a ploy.{FALSE} It is clear, from all of the sources presented in this course, that Black slaves constituted an overwhelming majority of the population of the Confederate States that had seceded. This explains why they were so reluctant to end the practice and why they defended it at all costs, including war.{FALSE} When Confederate soldiers attacked in battle, they made high-pitched, banshee-like scream which was supposed to strike fear in the hearts of their enemies. According to author Shelby Foote, this was called the Rebel Yell, and we are very fortunate to have many accurate written descriptions of this cry. But unfortunately for us today he claims, we can only make educated guesses as to the noise they created, because we cannot truly know exactly what it sounded like.{TRUE}
