Part 1
One of the stories that sparked interest in me was the one from Ta Quang Thinh. After they was bombed by the B-52 how his fellow men helped dig him out and took care of him in jungle hospitals for the next 4 years. That is a long time to be under medical attention especially in a jungle hospital. When it came time to transport him back to the north they used 3 people 2 carrying and the third to step in when one would get tired. This took seven months to get him there, but they did it. That took a lot of dedication from those guys carrying him to get him there. I’m not sure if there are many people that would be that dedicated to do that. With Ta being in such pain I’m sure he wasn’t the most pleasant to deal with that whole way, but they did it for the cause and what they believed in. To me this is an amazing act of unselfishness for those men carrying him. I’m sure they would rather be doing something else besides that task but they stuck with it. They might have been just following orders but never the less they seen it to the end and that commendable.
Part 2
The story that was most disappointing for me was the one from Ngo Vinh Long. The part that I found disappointing was how he was helping the U.S. at first by making maps but then he didn’t like that way the outlook on things was going and how people was being treated, so then he started protesting the war. I know it is only one person’s opinion on how the war was going, but I know they were a lot more that walked in his same shoes and did they same thing. This is one of the few we actually get to hear their side of the story. In his mind he thought he was doing good and trying to help eliminate unnecessary deaths. Then after the war he became a target for the Vietnamese refugees coming here the where they was even throwing bottles filled with gas at him. So he pretty much lost respect from several diverse groups of people.
In the same story with Ngo I think that it took a lot of guts for him to stand up for what he believed and to change his ways. We as humans don’t like to really go against the grain and would just rather look the other direction and act like we didn’t see anything bad happen. Look at the repercussion that came upon him for doing this his own people tried to kill him and this went on several years after the war had ended just because his people were convinced that he had done something that there was no proof of. He started helping because he thought that he was going to saves lives and his work might have, but he is not really remembered for trying to help he is just remembered for going against the war by protesting it. You can do multiple good things and people will forget, but do one thing wrong n someone’s eyes and it will haunt you till the end of life.
