Student Evaluation of Instruction & Course

ALL online courses at Lane are supposed to have a student evaluation component. While there may be some similarities, this specific student evaluation you are reading now is NOT a standardized list of questions that is used in every class, but is created by the individual instructor and unique to the class.

I am genuinely interested in creating the best online experience that I can, and I am certain there are ways I might be able to improve this course. With that in mind, I would appreciate your honest, thoughtful responses to the following questions.

The only module in Moodle which allows for completely anonymous student participation (even though you are logged into Moodle with your L# and PIN) is this Questionnaire Activity, specifically set to anonymous mode, which I have done. Moodle will record a submission "score" of "1" when you submit this completed survey.

If you complete this survey by the finals week Thursday 5pm deadline, I will add 1% to your final class grade for the term. I hope you take advantage of this opportunity.
NOTE: Every question below requires some sort of answer.

12. I enjoyed reading the student discussions. They were supposed to be a way for all students (even shy ones who never like to speak up in a regular class) to participate. The way I see it, if you simply get involved often and throughout the week, this should have been an easy A+ grade. Together, they counted for a substantial 25% of your class grade.

But as you may have seen or read for yourself, a number of students did not participate, failed to post by the first Wednesday deadline, posted less than three times a week, only posted on Sunday just before the deadline, or failed to put forth a thoughtful/analytical effort which included specific data from the materials (textbooks, videos/DVDs, web reading/watching/listening materials).

Help me to understand and/or provide me with any relevant feedback on this matter?

Deadlines for making your first post?
Scoring posts? 1 to 3 scale?
Length of assignment?
Topics change each week?
Group size? Random groups?
Worth your time and effort?

disclaimer: even though i might not have completely followed my suggestions during this class i do agree and would strive to do this in future classes.

the deadlines for the first post are very reasonable.  the one suggestion i would have is to make the points more difficult to receive.  if a person does not post by the first deadline, then they will not be allowed to post anything and receive no points for the first assignment.  if they participate in the second week, they must still post the assignment for the first week and the second assignment by wednesday or they will not receive points for the second week either.

scoring and the length are reasonable.

changing the topic allows for a greater opportunity to learn.

as far as group size/random groups i believe they would be good as long as everyone participates.  i did find myself with more posts this week and wanting to continue a few discussions but it was difficult to do so.  it is worth my time and effort.  even though there may not be many actual discussions i learn from putting a post together.

1this is one of my favorite classes ever taken in my college career, and i really enjoyed the readings and videos. the forums were more of a challenge because they had to be done often and had two different deadlines per week. the writing assignments were easier for me because i could find time within my busy schedule to sit down and write for whatever length of time i had. the forums were a great way to see other students' perspectives of the war, they just didn't mesh well with the way my schedule was built. that's only my point of view and experience with it however, and it is probably much easier for other students.
1deadlines- for a first post is fine as long as it is not deadline for initial posts on all 4 topics.

scoring- was good and fine

length- was appropriate for each assignment.

topics- a bit to many and much towards end of the term i thought. it made it hard to keep up and apply enough time and effort to effectively read posts from other students. they all started to dumb down in quality due to pressures of other classes and amount i feel. i noticed the same in my own quality of answers.
1i found it difficult to balance school, a full time job, and my family issues with the schedule provided. the free time i had available always literally existed late, late at night, and some of the prompts seemed poorly phrased and hard to sort through, in order to find the base question. the length of the assignments was reasonable, and the random groups were enjoyable.
1i enjoyed the forum part of this class.  i found it helpful to read what other students posted and to see their responses to what i posted.  i thught th deadlines were sufficient and the change of subject was nice.
1i did not feel that the timing in which you turned in your forum posts should affect your grade. the online course is taken by a large majority of students who are both working full time and attending courses at lane, the time they put aside for assignments could be later in the night if they work the night shift. so posting \\\"just before any deadline\\\" should not have a major affect on their grade rather the thoughtful/analytical effort. the topic changes leave little space for those to actual have lengthy conversations with their peers. the assignments prompts were awkwardly phrased and more in depth than necessary for the size of the assignment. it would work better if you stuck to one topic throughout the assignment rather than having multiples that fit under one theme.
1 the mere fact that other students failed to post made it difficult for there to be an ongoing conversation. i believe that it had nothing to do with deadlines, which i thought were generous actually, the length didn\'t seem to matter as much as the quality of the post which seemed to be lacking and other students seemed to just state opinions about the war rather than the topics at hand. it was worth the time and effort but the lack of response made it difficult to get what we could have gotten/learned from it.
1everything in this course seemed fair and there was ample time to do the assignments.
1deadlines for making your first post-i think that wednesday was a fair deadline for making my first.  i think that was half way through the week which allowed students to talk to one another about the subject.
scoring posts? 1 to 3 scale: i think that the scoring of the posts seemed a bit unfair via online because it\'s harder to explain yourself(which i know is part of taking an online class) but with that being said, things said can be perceived many different ways and really when the instructor doesn\'t get involved and ask questions to try to find out where the student may have been going with that thought rather than reading it as it is and counting them down even when they are participating and taking the time to post to the forum.
length of assignment-the length of the assignments were perfect. i don\'t think that we could have really answered your questions if they were required to be any shorter and probably would have rambled on if they were required to be any longer.
group size? random groups? i was a little confused with the groups at first, but then once i understood i thought that was pretty cool.  the size was perfect.
worth your time and effort-i think that this class was worth my time and effort however, even the effort i did put forth, i\'m not a very good retainer of history. i never have been, in fact it\'s my worst subject, but i tried to keep up with everything and for the most part did pretty well in that department.  i think that had i known what was coming up in the weeks ahead would have been helpful because i seemed to spend most of my time reading and watching the videos and it was hard to keep up with all of the material although, it was all very important when really getting to know what vietnam was all about.
1i personally love the class but feel like it is really hard to go back and forth from video to the herring book and then to the appy book and other video clips. it is not hard just time consuming and i have so much work to do. i think that people should talk to their instructor more often, mr. escobar has high expectations for his students and seems very strict but at the same time is very understanding when a student puts forth and effort.
1for myself, i recognize that i failed to get as much from the forums as i could have because of unexpected complications in my own life. the opportunity was well presented through the forum process, but the amount of time that i had expected to be able to allot for this course was commandeered by the needs of my small business. the only feedback i would suggest is that you somehow encourage people to post in smaller chunks. a forum full of extremely long posts is difficult to engage with in a two way fashion. it seemed more like a group of competing assignment papers rather than having the feeling of a round table discussion. when people talk over dinner about politics, history ect,... the comments and ideas are handed back and forth in small bite sized portions and i think that finding a way to encourage this type of feeling in the forums would make them more engaging.
1i think for some students it might have been hard for them to post the dicussions in a worthwhile manner because the vietnam war can be interpreted in such a different way. also it a very sentivity subject and they did not want to offend anyone in the class.
1i thought that the deadlines were easily meet-able and the assignment were not to hard but the way that they were scored left lots to question, also the teacher never participated in these discussions or graded our answers with reasons behind them.
1

i have messaged you about this sir.

1- the wednesday deadline were fine if the discussion only involved videos. most of the time there was too much reading to post by the deadline. - the scoring, length, and topic size was fine. - i think the discussion should have been the entire class. it was tough some weeks when there wasn't much to comment on or ask questions about. - for the most part it was worth it. there was a week or two that didn't produce much discussion.
1none
1i felt that the deadlines were clear, though the weight of the wednesday deadline was not.
1 i found the wednesday deadline hard to meet. that it was sometime hard to have all the materials read, watched or listened to by that date.

14. LCC is beginning to focus on Open Educational Resources (OER) as a way to help students by reducing or eventually eliminating the need for costly textbooks. Basically, "free" materials found on the web would be used as a replacement.

While this sounds like a great idea on the surface, it would involve many changes in the way instructors and students interact with class materials.

I can think of at least two very substantial changes that would have to happen immediately.

#1 Materials would come from any number of websites and sources. This would necessitate incredible organization on the part of the instructor and student: keeping reading links in order, which specific pages of that multipage website are required reading, hoping that the links don't become "dead" links. Also, just because an instructor could add a new link at any time, some students may not "get the message" about the new required materials in a timely fashion. In short, think of a textbook with potentially "disappearing" pages and magically reappearing "new" pages.

#2 You would have to do all of your reading online. (Of course, some students may choose to print out the materials, but think of printing out your current textbooks, either a few chapters at a time or everything that is needed for the term. Do you have a printer? Do you have that much paper and ink? Does the replacement of a textbook that results in the printing of volumes of paper cause more problems than it solves?) Do you like to read online, whether it be on computer screen, or Kindle/iPad, or even smart cell phone? Do you have access to (money for) these devices? Does this affect how you would take written/typed/highlighted notes on the materials?

These are some of my thoughts, but the question to you is simple. What can you tell me about your own readiness or willingness to buy or not to buy textbooks and save money (or not), surf to many different websites (or not), read online (or not), print webpages (or not) for a history class such as this one?

the library at lcc has computers for student use and laptops available for checkout in the library also.  the public library has computers for public use.  access should not be an issue for any student signing up for a hybrid course.

i would not want to print materials out at home; the cost involved would likely be more than the price of your texts.  there is also a limit as to how much you can print at lcc.  the library charges for printing.

for this class and several others i will keep the textbook.

if an instructor is spending additional time putting together course materials that is time taken away from the instructor which may be better spent elsewhere.

college is expensive.  regardless of the technology available, textbooks are still a valuable learning resource and their cost is part of attending college.

1for a class like this, i enjoyed reading the smaller sized books each day. i would not want to do away with the appy or herring books because i love reading and i like having the book in hand. however with a science textbook for example, i would not mind reading the material online.
1text books are still the best way to go. to organize so much online info for students would be a headache and i think many students would not be happy or even capable at times to do assignments. we are pressed to sit in front of computers enough and there is something nice and easy about laying back with a book and reading this way. assignments online from time to time would be ok i think with enough warning and prep. like put on syllabus and announced in forums, as well as email.
1i think that sounds like a huge hassle, full of holes and what ifs. i personally enjoy being able to look at a textbook...i retain the information much more efficiently.
1i am willimg to save $, textbooks are  rip-off!  iwould be happy to search the web and have web based books rather than forking out 100'f os dolars for textbboks, most which i cant resell.
1if all of the reading is done online than the instructor should be more flexible with his deadlines if students could not get the site to work.
1 i think that would be a terrible idea. first the health risks, strain on your eyes, the amount of time spent on electronic devices is already high and there is no need to raise it. the idea that the instructor would have to really have to rely on the credibility of websites and their publishers, which we all know is a fast changing business. the ability to go back and reference materials, for mid terms and finals could be potentially jeopardized...this is a very scary idea, and makes me worry about the "savings" being to important rather than the "quality" of my education and i am willing to pay more for quality.
1i would like a combination of text books along with web and video materials, especially in a history class that has so much to it like this one.
1

i think that having no textbooks may be better financially however, having a text book to constantly be able to bring along with you if you\'re out of town, working, have kids to take care of and have a busy schedule period, the online material will keep a student a lot more dedicated to always needing a computer. so all in all, if the student doesn\'t have a laptop or constant use of a computer, it could be a bit rough for that person to utilize online classes.

i don\'t mind reading online, in fact, it seems as though the material i read and see make it easier for me to remember and retain vs. the materials in the books and movies.  i had a really rough time on the midterm trying to remember everything and keep the names straight, etc.  it was pretty difficult for me to keep names and faces together so being on the computer could help people like me who have a harder time retaining information through text books and movies.

1i like it. i personally highlighted like the whole herring book, it is almost worth nothing now, so i think that is concerning. also, with so much reading, who really wants to sit at a device that long when you could relax and read. i take in information better when i can relax.
1i think that the incorporation of online sources such as movies, audio, and interactive things like forums can fill our an idea or concept, but that texts are still the bedrock of the educational material. weather that text book is in digital format or book format is irrelevant as long as the student has ready access to it. with the books from this class i would carry one at all times, and when an opportunity presented itself i would read a couple pages. that was more of a time management issue than an access issue. if, hypothetically, the texts were available on moodle, and a student wanted to access them that way, the content would be the same. for me that would be a limiting factor, and i would likely opt to purchase the hard copy for convenience sake, but i do not see why a student couldn\'t have the book on an electronic reader, or even on their iphone, if they were comfortable with the format.
1i think it would be really had for students to do all of there reading online. it would be nice to not have to send so much on books but i think it would be hard for a student to read and understand the material if it was just on a website and not in a book in front of them.
1i definitely liked the online reading materials better than reading a textbook, and buying one. i think it would be very beneficial to make the change to that.
1i prefer textbooks. i cannot put a price on reliable information.
1- i will only buy textbooks if i cannot find it for free or at a deep discount from a service on the internet. i didn't spend a dime on the texts or videos for this course. it was all downloaded from the internet. - if someone is uncomfortable with navigating to and reading web pages, then they probably need to not take online courses. i think courses like this come with the expectation of knowing how to use the internet.
1none
1i don't believe that oer would be significantly superior or inferior to textbooks. they would be cheaper, but books are an excellent technology.
1 i personally would not want to completely give up text books. i take my books with me to work and others place that i would not want to take my laptop. i think it would limit many people\'s ability to study.

16. What recommendations would you suggest in order to improve this course?

#Response
1see above. this is a wonderful course and i consider myself lucky to have been able to take it, twice.
1nothing comes to mind because this class was awesome. i've never taken such a detailed class of a specific time period and i loved learning everything about the vietnam war. i feel that i've taken away more from this class than almost any other in the years i've been in college.
1decreased amount of topics towards end of term. open ended to insight more discussion and originallity in posts. by this i mean, perhaps have it so that the student asks a question of say nixon, johnson etc....about aspects of the war. i find most students repeat each other because of limited resources on exact points of information. so the student just replies with "i agree" and essentially stating the same thing in their own words. discussions need to be original. i saw good discussions when students would ask a question. when a student asked about hollywood's view of the war, many students had opinions and information to provide i think. they seemed like they wanted to.
1clearer phrasing when it comes to prompts for assignments.
1i have none
1to improve this course the instructor should attempt to reach out to his students in forums and be active. i only spoke with the instructor once and he was less than helpful and my grade reflected his attitude. once i began to write more towards his point of view my grade went up remarkably. it would be helpful if the instructor was more open minded to others views of the war and grade accordingly.
1i think the material for the class (text and video) was effective and beneficial. i liked the way the videos and readings are just enough to give you important information and not overload you in information or make you feel like you wasted your time, so i have no suggestions.
1this course was well thought out. no recommendations are needed
1i would reccommend that the assignments not be worth so many points especially if it\'s based on a persons opinion. i understand that you have to have something to back up your opinion but when you get a satisfactory grade on something you thought you did very well at, it can be frustrating.  i did all of the coursework, got it in on time, studied, read, watched the videos and i still am not going to pass this class because i\'m not able to retain information like many other students who took this course.  unfortunately online classes are really the only thing i can take at this time because i have to work full time and my hours at work do not allow me to be very flexible with my school schedule.  my best recommendation to any other students taking this class would be to make sure that you are taking this class all by itself rather than attempting to give your attention to any other classes during the same term.  it requires a lot of attention and a lot of reading, watching and retaining.
1i like the class, i just think it should have 2 parts because of all of the various materials.
1none, other than the minor suggestions regarding the forum. i felt that this class was well conceived and executed. when i was checking the grade status, i particularly appreciated the comparative grade display. it did not violate anybodies privacy, but gave perspective on how one was doing compared to the \"pack\", it also was very helpful to know get a sense of how much grade maneuverability was available at any point in the term. i would have liked more timely feedback on the assignments, but understand that the instructor is working through the adaptation of new technology in this regard.
3none
1more feedback either positive or negative. also a more personable and helpful attitude towards students asking for help. that would improve the class greatly.
1i know online courses are mostly busy work, but there was quite a lot of reading.
1leaving resources up after their relevant week would be nice. i sometimes want to revisit information.
1i do not have any recommendations at this time.

1in the interest of honesty, i tried to skip answering part of number 13. i tried not to rate the legacies video or the pow video because i have not had the time to view them. the questionnaire would not let me bypass those, so you can take those answers as fictional. my apologies.

i would not like to add anything.

1no, i think you covered it.
1you should ask what kind of technical problems students might have had with viewing videos and such from moodle.
