The Iniquity to be Consummated.

Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, Morning Herald [Whig]

(20 May 1854)

It is now reduced to a certainty that the Nebraska bill, which is repudiated by every honest man, and whose author's name is execrated from Canada to Cuba, will pass Congress. Well, if the bill must pass, let its authors pass it -- let the iniquity be consummated. We have some consolation in the belief that reaction will soon follow, and justice and freedom have their revenge on the traitors who now so arrogantly despise the will of the people. All faith in compromises will be dissipated, when the signature of President Pierce is attached to the bill; and then will come the tug of war between the northern love of liberty, and the supremacy of Southern slavery. Then it will be determined whether the Southern aristocracy and their chattels, or the Northern people with their plows, hatchets and rifles will occupy the western wilderness; and whether freedom or slavery shall become the basis of American civilization.
