No Title.New Haven, Connecticut, Register [Democratic](4 February 1854)
[pointing finger] The abolitionists, free soilers, and free soil
whigs, the Boston Post thinks, had better save their
breath to cool their porridge, instead of wasting it
in denunciation of the Nebraska bill. The efforts
of Charles Sumner and Mr. Chase, in the U. S. Senate,
and Giddings & Co., in the House of Representatives,
backed by Garrison, Wilson, Rev. Charles
Hudson &., in Massachusetts, will only demonstrate
The weakness of their cause, and hasten the question
at issue in accordance with the great fundamental
principle of republican government: the right of
the people to govern themselves; the right of citizens
in Territories and States to establish such laws
as they may deem best for their own control, providing
they do not conflict with the Constitution of the
United States.
