How Nebraska was Passed.Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, Morning Herald [Whig](25 May 1854)
A Washington correspondent writing in reference
to the change of front by a number of Northern
members, says, it will be well for the people
to investigate closely the motives of the members
from the North, who have changed their position
on this question. The charges and the proofs of
bribery are thick as autumn leaves. One man
admits that he expects to obtain for his vote the post
of Governor of Minnesota. Another notoriously
sold his for the appointment of postmaster to a
small town in his district. Upon the whole, the
history of the affair from the beginning has been
that of a corrupt intervention by the Executive
with the independence of Congress. What
compensation did the eleven Pennsylvania "doughfaces"
receive for their treachery to the North?
