Columbus, Ohio, State Journal [Republican]

(23 May 1856)

[Pointing Finger] The telegraphic despatches to-day will be read with interest. In the Senate Mr. Sumner stirred up the bile of Douglas to no ordinary degree, and developed the blackguard in him rather more prominently than usual. Mr. Mason, of Va., made himself ridiculous by his pompous airs of attempted superiority. The truth is known to every one who is conversant with the men, that in all the elements of scholarship, courtly bearing, and deportment,Mr. Sumner is the peer of any man in the Senate. It is an old game, this attempting to sneer down the Senators from the North, but it is too late for it to succeed. It is evident that the trio of Locofocos did not make expenses by their attack.
