The Nebraska Bill.New Orleans, Louisiana, Bee [Whig](25 May 1854)
According to a telegraphic dispatch
from Washington, which appeared in yesterday's
Evening Picayune, the Nebraska bill, divested of the
Clayton amendment, passed the House of Representatives,
late on Tuesday evening, by a vote of 113 yeas to
100 nays. Twenty members were reported absent. As
the long agony is over we trust Congress will attend to
the legitimate business of the country, which has been
grossly neglected for months in consequence of this
impracticable measure. Its passage can do the South no
good -- the North no harm. Now that a correct, yet
absolutely barren principle, has been needlessly re-affirmed,
we trust agitation will cease. If Abolitionists will rave,
let them rave unheeded. They will soon exhaust themselves
if unnoticed by the Southern press and Southern
statesmen.
