Midterm #3 Essay Questions

Three of the four questions will be on the exam. You will write on one of those three questions. Prepare for two of the following questions to be "safe". You may use a 4x8" index card for notes.

1. Why did the United States not go to war against England in 1794 and against France in 1798-9?

2. Throughout our history, the Supreme Court has acted as a partisan political body rather than a neutral arbitrater of constutional principles.

Assess the validity of this generalization for the period 1801-1840.

3. Discuss two reasons why nationalism developed in the United States after the War of 1812. Describe two developments during this period that illustrate the growth of nationalism.

4. The Jacksonian Democrats viewed themselves as the guardians of the United States Constitution, political democracy, individual liberty, and the equality of economic opportunity.

In light of the following documents and your knowledge of the 1820's and 1830's, to what extent do you agree with the Jacksonians' view of themselves?
