I want to congratulate many of you who scored much higher on the final than you did on the midterm. That, of course, did not stop me from adjusting the scores upward even more, based on poor questions, typos, etc.

The 10th week has ended and your final exam is next week.
Your second paper has been graded and new grades have been posted. You can see the score by clicking the GRADES link on the class website. You can read comments on your papers by going back to the place where you turned your papers in, entering your L# (no password), and clicking the REVIEW button.
Be sure to get the Final Exam Study List on the class website under the HANDOUTS link. It's been on the web for over a week already.
You will take your final exams, just as you did your midterms. THERE IS AN IMPORTANT EXCEPTION. The LAST day to take exams is on THURSDAY, not Friday. The testing center closes for the term at 5pm on Thursday. That is the time that I will retrieve your grades. I hope to have final class grades posted by Friday at noon.

At the end of the 7th week was the deadline for the optional extra credit assignment. This is also noted on the grades web page (Yes or blank), but will not be figured into your grade until the end of the term, and then, only for borderline grades.
You have an important choice to make, and the two most important indicators are on that grades webpage.
The Probable Class Grade column shows you what you will get in the class if you do on your second paper and final exam exactly what you did on the first paper and midterm exam. (By the way, your 2nd paper is due next WEDNESDAY, Nov 26, by 3pm... BEFORE THANKSGIVING)
The Highest Class Grade column shows you what is the highest score you can earn if you "ace" the second paper and final exam (100% each).
Needless to say, your final class grade will probably fall somewhere between these to columns. Now make a proper academic decision for yourself by tomorrow at 5pm.

Your first papers have been graded and all grades have been updated on the class website under the GRADES link.

The final two columns are very important.

Your midterm exams have been graded, and these scores have been posted on the class website.
I have done an item analysis on exam, made adjustments for errors or poor questions, and have taken into account the test difficulty level. After all adjustments were made, everyone's score was adjusted upwards by a very generous 6%.
I have NOT, however, met my self-imposed deadline of having your first papers graded. I plan to finish them this weekend and have those scores and updated grades reposted on Monday.

Two close friends of mine were in Viet Nam 65'/66,
66'/67. When I mentioned this class one asked, "Did they mention oil"? Turns out Conoco, and Sinclair both had platforms in the Gulf! He saw them before they hit the beach in Da Nang. The other one asked about Bell Helicopter. Made billions during the sixties and seventies, Humphrie family major player in that firm. And so while the US may have lost 58,000 of her soldiers there, some capitalists gained greatly.

Well, it's official. The first true class deadline has come and gone. You can check the website under the GRADES link to see if I received an assignment from you or not. Since this assignment was worth 20% of your grade, and since late work is not accepted, I hope those of you who did not complete the assignment will take this opportunity act accordingly with your class schedule. For those who did complete the assignment, I hope to have them graded and "returned" to you by the end of next week... the same deadline as your midterm exam.
IMPORTANT - You will KNOW that they are ready when you "see" the HST195 - Vietnam War Written Assignment #1 button on the TURN IN ASSIGNMENT link on the class homepage. This button is now hidden. When you see the button next Friday, click it, enter your L# (no password) as before, and click the REVIEW (not Request) button. You will see your graded papers with my comments (IN ALL CAPS).
Next week, you will be taking your midterm exams. The important info is:

Most important, all exams must be COMPLETED by 5pm. I should be able to have your scores to you later that evening. They, along with your term paper scores will be posted on the class website.

I hope that your studies are going well. Here's an email update (and I'll post it on the class bulletin board as well) for the end of the 4th week of the term.
FIRST
Are you even enrolled in the class? Are you on the class email list? Both of these questions are answered on the class homepage under the GRADES link. If your L# is not on the list, you aren't officially registered and you won't be able to turn in your homework assignment or take the midterm exam. If it says NO next to your L#, then you aren't receiving this email (no reminders for you... for the rest of you who may wonder why I'm talking to people who won't be receiving this email, I'm posting this letter on the class bulletinboard. I hope at least those students will get this information there!!!). Sign up on the class email list... it's easy.
SECOND
Your first Written Assignment is due next Friday, October 31, by 3pm. Be certain you "turn it in" the correct way. If you did the required practice homework assignment (no everyone did) correctly, you should have no problems. There will be no allowances for "I didn't knows" and/or turning it in the wrong way. Read the syllabus.
THIRD
Your midterm study list has been posted on under the HANDOUTS link on the class website (over one week in advance of the exam.) Don't attempt to take your midterms without using this tool to focus your studies.

FINALLY, you are now able to look at your completed practice homework assignments. Go back to the link on the class homepage where you turned in the assignment, type in your L#, and click REVIEW MY SCORE instead of the REQUEST button. The "score" is 100 or 0. (Remember, this was for practice.) My comments are brief and indicate whether I received your assignment ON TIME or not. For your REAL written assignments, you will need to turn them in the same way, on time. Needless to say, if you completed this assignment correctly and on time, then you are all set for your real deadline on October 31st, your first paper. If you failed to complete this assignment or did not do it on time, then you may be risking 20% of your grade in this class. Plan accordingly.
Anyone else shocked and amazed that the British -- sent to South Vietnam from Burma, one of the most vicious theaters of the Second World War -- would allow the Japanese to remain armed in order to help the French put down the Vietnamese nationalist movement? I believe that this decision on the part of the British demonstrates the utter hatred that colonialists had/have for indigenous agricultural peoples. The British had more respect for the Japanese because the Japanese fought them with a large industrial, mechanized army. Comments?
Just a reminder that your practice assignment is due TODAY, Friday, Oct 10 at 3pm. Instructions are on the syllabus. This will be the way your turn in your 2 papers during the term.
