WORLD WAR II TERMS

facism
- individuals existed only to serve the military goals of the state; individual rights and freedoms were deniedblitzkrieg - "lightning war"; Germany's rapid, full-scale attack of her enemies
appeasement - to buy off an aggressor by concessions, usually at the sacrifice of principles
concessions - to grant as a right or priviledge; yield
intelligence - information concerning an enemy or possible enemy
mobilization - to assemble and make ready for war
purge - to get rid of someone or something which is undesirable
front - a zone of conflict between armies; battlezone
Kremlin - capitol in Moscow, Soviet Union
Red Army - the military organization of the Soviet Union
siege - ground forces encircle a city and wait for the occupants to surrender due to starvation and/or lack of supplies
blockade - encirling a country or its coast with naval forces thus disenabling communication and trade by sea
isolationist - any person or group of people (ie the United States) who does not wish to enter into international events in order to maintain neutrality
interventionist - persons who desire to become involved with the affairs of foreign countries
Lend-Lease Act - stated that the United States can sell, transfer, exchange, lease, lend any defense article to any country whose defense the President deems vital to the defense of the U.S.
R.A.F. - the Royal Air Force of Great Britain
Luftwaffe - Germany's Air Force under Herman Goering
N.A.Z.I. - the national socialist (German workers') party of Germany which was controlled by Hitler
Neutrality Acts - measures of the United States to right the wrongs which involved the U.S. in WWI and an isolationist policy symbolic of America's desire to stay out of Europe's affairs
embargo - economic action forbedding export or trade with a country
annexation - the policy of taking territory and adding it as part of one's own country
Munich Pact - a treaty which stated that Hitler would take no further aggressions in Europe if Britain, under Prime Minister Chamberlain, and France would give the Sudetenland, part of Czechoslovakia, to Germany
Nazi-Soviet Pact - a treaty of non-aggression between Adolf Hitler's Germany and Josef Stalin's Soviet Union
Panay Incident - a international crisis occurred when Japanese planes bombed a neutral U.S. vessel, the Panay, on the Yangtse River in China while fighting the Chinese as part of their conquest of Asia
New Order - Japan's ideological pursuit of an empire in Asia in which the Japanese would reign supreme above all other Asian peoples
Ludlow Amendment - a bill which would take the power to declare war out of the hands of the Congress and put it directly into the hands of the American voters (in hopes to further deter war)
genocide - the killing/murder of an entire race/group of people
scortched earth - the Soviet Union's policy of retreating from the German Wehremacht (army) and burning and destroying everything (crops, buildings, power plants, fuel, weapons, etc.)which could be of any possible use to the enemy
scapegoat - a group of people which are unjustly blamed for all of the wrongs which plague another group of people and are persecuted as a result of these false charges
