Choose and answer one of the following four questions

• THE PRESIDENTS COMPARED

      Compare and contrast presidents Hoover and Roosevelt using all of the terms below and their applicable significances:

          self-made man, rugged individualism, Hoovervilles, polio, New Deal,

          election of 1932, Hundred Days, Bank Holiday, fireside chats, common man

• RELIEF, RECOVERY, REFORM, & THE ALPHABET AGENCIES

      Define each of the "three R's". Pick one agency listed in each of the cateories below and explain what it did, why it is either relief, recovery, or reform, and whether is was successful in its goal or not.

          Relief -------> WPA, CCC, NYA

          Recovery ----> RFC, HOLC, PWA (pump priming)

          Reform ------> FDIC, SEC, SS

• NRA, AAA, AND COURT-PACKING

      Discuss each of the agencies. Make sure to answer these questions. What did they do? Why was each ruled unconstitutional by the Supreme Court and its significance to Roosevelt's New Deal program? What is "court-packing" and what happened to FDR and his second administration because of it?

          Schecter Poultry v. U.S., U.S. v. Butler, fair codes of competition, system of checks and balances (executive, judicial, and legislative branches of government)

• COMMUNISM, SOCIALISM, & CRITICISMS OF THE NEW DEAL

      Define communism and socialism and discuss (briefly) the differences between them. What were some of the conservative criticisms of the New Deal? What were the radical criticisms? What relationship did these criticisms have with communism or socialism?

• THE NEUTRALITY ACTS & THE LEND LEASE ACT

The majority of United States citizens were isolationist in 1939. What is isolationism? What stance did the president, FDR take? Explain the provisions of the Neutrality Acts and how each was specifically trying to avoid the problems experienced just before WWI? Then came the Lend-Lease Act. How was it defined and what steps did FDR and the United States take which directly opposed the original purpose and restrictions of the Neutrality Acts?

• THE UNITED STATES, JAPAN, & PEARL HARBOR

Relations between the United States and Japan began to deteriorate during the 1930's. Explain each countries' actions and the order of events which eventually brought both countries to war and directly caused the United States to enter World War II. Use the following vocabulary terms.
