Notes for Easy Website to Moodle conversion



What is lost.

Moodle is not public... limited to L# and PIN
Logins were required for instructors only in EWS  
In Moodle, everyone logs in at the same webpage 
 with L# and PIN 

Handouts checkboxes to "turn on and off" visibility (can be replicated in Moodle by moving files to and from visible/linked and invisible/unlinked folders)  see *** below




What is easily replaced.  

Student view and Instructor views are available in Moodle

Moodle has the same copy and paste, GUI "magic menu" editing system as EWS.

EWS Syllabus link obsolete - use a Moodle web page resource (compose a web page)



EWS handouts are uploaded one at a time.  In Moodle, you can zip and upload multiple files/folders at one time.  You can show one handout at a time or an entire directory at once.

EWS Maillist feature can easily and more powerfully be replicated with a Moodle "Announcements" Forum.

EWS Discussion feature is now a Moodle Forum, with much more power, such as uploading/attaching photos.


EWS Grades can be replicated in one of two ways.  
#1 upload a modified Excel sheet as a Web page showing ALL students grades, which they find with the unique code word or last 4 of L# in non-alpha sort
#2 use Moodle which shows only individual student grades, but involves a Gradebook learning curve



EWS Links easily done in Moodle as individual Resource links OR can be done as a Moodle web page with many links.  You now have the ability to ORGANIZE these links in Moodle, unlike EWS.



Moodle advantages

One Moodle class created for each section you teach, complete with automatic student enrollments.

Enrolled-student-only access.  Helpful with intellectual property maintenance and using publisher materials that need to have "limited access" for copyright compliance.

***You have full control of the file directory structure for a course.  Coupled with uploading many files at one and using the Moodle resource Display a Directory, this is much more powerful that what you currently have in EWS.
