So, go to /users/loginname and at the command line type

htpasswd -cb .htpasswd username password

Now in the folder you want protected, make a text file and name it .htaccess that contains the following text.

AuthName "Give it a Name Here"
AuthType Basic
AuthUserFile /users/loginname/.htpasswd
require valid-user


Save this file as .htaccess and restart apache.
