Understanding Eriksons Stages of Psychosocial Development
Joyce Mitchell and Lee Haroun
Your child is 3 years old and your sister-in-law has agreed to baby-sit for you while you do your shopping. She is a health care student, and you have always felt your child was safe with her because she seemed very knowledgeable of health issues. You know they have recently had a swimming pool installed, but are surprised when you note the doors are open to the backyard. You express your concern for your childs safety, and your sister-in-law gets very defensive. She says she will watch your child to prevent her from any harm as she always has in the past. Besides, your child is in the toddler stage of development and has to learn autonomy for her psychosocial development. Is the sister-in-law correct? Is Eriksons Stage of Psychosocial Development of autonomy vs. shame/doubt being interpreted correctly? Are there any misunderstandings in this scenario?

Stages of Dying as They Apply to Any Loss
Joyce Mitchell and Lee Haroun
The stages of dying as discussed in the textbook are denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. They also apply to the process of grieving any loss, not just dying. Have your experiences confirmed these stages?

Hospice and Palliative Care
Joyce Mitchell and Lee Haroun
Hospice refers to palliative care (relieves but does not cure) and support provided to dying patients and their families. In order for a dying person to be part of hospice, he or she must agree not to seek any further curative treatments. What are your thoughts on when palliative care is appropriate? Do you feel that all technological advances should be pursued in an attempt to prolong life? Do your beliefs vary with the different age groups?
