There are many difficult issues on which people have opposing views. Examples include abortion, the use of life support, and euthanasia. Sometimes our personal values and beliefs are different from those accepted and practiced in the facilities in which we work. What can health care workers do in these situations?

Confidentiality

Confidentiality is an important patient right. Sometimes, however, it is difficult to know what to do when respecting the right of the patient can cause other serious problems. For example, a patient confides to a nurse or other caregiver that he intends to commit suicide after being released from the hospital. Or a patient with a genetic disease refuses to inform her children, who might also have the disease. What are ways that health care workers can handle situations that involve conflicts between patient confidentiality and the safety and health of themselves and/or others?

Malpractice Lawsuits

The increasing number of malpractice lawsuits has contributed to the rise in costs of medical care. It can also be emotionally upsetting and time consuming for everyone involved. What can health care workers do to help decrease the number of medical malpractice lawsuits?
