Professionalism is difficult to define, because it consists of many characteristics and behaviors. Health care workers best display professionalism by dedicating themselves to doing their best on the job and providing and maintaining high-quality service. The expression “caring competence” is a good way to describe professionalism in health care.
Attitude:
* Be committed to your work.
* Keep patient care and services uppermost in your mind.
* Be objective in your approach.
* View problems as opportunities for action.
* Develop and practice self-discipline.
Conduct:
* Be dependable.
* Perform all duties as assigned and/or as needed.
* Be flexible.
* Accept differences and change.
* Treat everyone with courtesy and consideration.
Appearance:
* Practice personal cleanliness.
* Use deodorant daily.
* Pay attention to dental hygiene.
* Avoid use of strong-smelling perfumes and/or sprays.
* Avoid extremes in dress and grooming.
Skills:
* Understand your work in depth, and know what your responsibilities are.
* Observe and listen carefully.
* Consult references; ask questions when in doubt.
* Perform all work neatly and accurately.
* Dedicate time to gaining new knowledge and skills.
“Professional distance” describes the proper worker/patient relationship, for instance, demonstrating a caring attitude toward a patient without being too friendly. It also means not getting too emotionally involved with patients and their problems.
An objective response to criticism is what is necessary to appear to perform professionally and constructively. This means viewing criticism as a learning opportunity instead of acting defensively. Criticism should be evaluated so you can decide if it has value and should be considered. Being willing to recognize and work on personal imperfections is a sign of emotional maturity and professionalism.
Advantages of participating in the activities of a professional organization include:

* Participating in continuing education to keep current
* Encouraging member networking, advising, and role modeling
* Supporting legislation on behalf of the profession and health care in general
* Developing management and leadership skills
Characteristics of effective leaders in health care include:
* Professional competence
* Commitment to providing quality service
* Willingness to recognize and support the work of others
* Dedication to meeting high standards
* Belief that needed changes and/or improvements can be made
* Willingness to serve as an example
* Ability to communicate effectively
