Frequently Asked Questions

How can I make my computer work area at home ergonomically safe?

Use the principles of proper positioning to adjust the work area for correct placement.

My employer requires that we wear back belts. Since OSHA does not recognize their effectiveness in preventing back injury, do I really need to wear one?

The value of wearing a back belt may be controversial, but this does not exempt you from following your employer’s policies.

I am in very good physical condition and have never had any injury. Is it really necessary for me to learn body mechanics?

Yes. An absence of injury in the past does not guarantee an absence of future injury. Remember, it is the repeated errors that add up to an injury. Health care workers often work in environments that require repeated types of movements that may include a lot of sitting, walking, standing, and lifting which, if done improperly, can lead to injury over time. Also, as the body ages, it is more prone to injury.
