Go to the National Library of Medicine site at http://www.nlm.nih.gov/, and click on “List of NLM Databases & Resources.” Then scroll down and click on “Unified Medical Language System (UMLS).” Write a paragraph explaining what the metathesaurus is and how it helps people find medical information that is stored electronically.

Go to the Merck site at http://www.merck.com/, and click on “The Merck Manuals.” Next, click on “The Merck Manual - Home Edition.” Then do a search for “medical terms.” Select “Understanding Medical Terms.” Scroll down the page to the list of prefixes and suffixes. Review the list, and write down five prefixes and five suffixes that are new to you.

Go to the Lviv State Medical University site at http://www.meduniv.lviv.ua/, and click on “English Version,” and then click on “World Best Medical Sites.” Click on “Dictionaries” in the menu at the left of the page. Explore the various dictionaries and glossaries available at this site, and write brief descriptions of the three you find most interesting.
