For those of you who don't read Slashdot headlines, Sun has an interview regarding the new features being worked out for Java 1.5 available here.  I can't say that I was happy with the changes Sun made from 1.4.1_01 to 1.4.1_02, given that I recently upgraded expecting only minor bugfixes to find many of my classes no longer compiled.  It seems I was doing several things wrong and wasn't aware of this because javac wasn't even generating a warning about it.  Suddenly something that used to be privately ignored was an error condition.  How nice, eh?

At any rate, these changes will avoid breaking existing code, and they will make Java both a little more complex to fully understand and a lot easier to do once you do.  Note the extended for loop example has an error - the method should be .cancel, not .close.  The example makes a lot more sense once you debug it, really it does!

Note, none of this will affect any of us in the CIT department at all unless we have not taken CS260 before winter 2004 since 1.5 will not be released to the general public before fall 2003.  This is just what we have to look forward to if we continue to write code in Java.  Who needs .NUT anyway?
