DQ#7 1-2 pages on one of the arguments of the existence of God.(Due Fri.3/7)
DQ#8 1-2 pages discussing "The Problem of Evil" (Due Fri.3/14-last day)
-God is omnipotent
-God is good
-There is evil
"God does not exist" is contradictory
-Anselm
-God doesn't exist=God only exists in your mind.
-But God is the Greatest Conceivable Being, a being that only exists in the mind is not the GCB.
-(-1)=1, therefore(God doesn't exist is contradictory)= God must exist
Bertrand Russel:believed this argument for 2 2weeks
Objections:
1. Gaunillon's Greatest Conceivable Island objection: a reductio argument aimed at Anselm ...if Anselm's argument worked it's same form can be used to prove anything
"An argument which can prove anything proves nothing"
Anselm's Reply:
My argument only works for "being" in general, not kinds of beings.
The argument works for (GCB) not GCX.
2.Maybe the "concept" of God is... contradictory
Paradox of omnipotence " could god create a rock so heavy that he himself could not lift it?"
3.Existence isn't a property(Kant)
Thing: My Car, exist or doesn't
20yrs. old
runs good
yellow
dirty
Concept:a.description(properties)
b.Is this instantiated?
