Recap on act utilitarianism objection- Too permissive-bite the bullet,point to neg.side effects,and rule util.,critz-collapses into act.
Act Utilitarian-can follow rules of thumb most of the time unless there arises a special case prevents you from doing to maxamize happiness

Example-Right to free speech mill (absolutist) having this as a universal rule maxamizes happiness.(or would do so if everyone respected it.)

Mills political philosophy-libertarian-wrote on liberty
main idea-you should only hve laws against direct and specific harm of individuals or property-bodily, freedom

Rejects Paternalism-the government acting as a parent, father.
Mill seems to favor rule not act util.

Deontology-(deon=rule) kant's theorys. the right act is that which is in accord w/ the right moral rule or principles
Prohibitions-things you can't do
Permissions-things you can or can't do.
Rules stem from reason other possible intrinsic goods
Happiness-sadism-people of ill will don't deserve happiness/people w/ good will should have the hedons(unit of pleasure).
Intelligence-needs to be pared w/good will (evil genius)
Wit/humor-used to demean people
Freedom-escaped murderer.
