Animal Rights
-meat is not necessary for the human diet
-meat contributes to health problems
-meat production uses a lot more natural
resources
-factory farmed animals suffer from inhumane
treatment

suffering vs. killing
-utilitarian argument: as long as you replace
happy animals you kill, it's ok (ignoring global and
enviornmental implications)

Common Argument for
1.) It's natural; naturalistic fallacy many things are
natural but they are wrong
example: rape, violence, selfishness, aggression
are all natural but wrong
2.) Animals can't have rights because they don't
have the capacity to reason, the capacity to be
ethical

objection
-Some animals do exhibit morality
example: dogs show loyalty to the pack. Is that not
a form of morality
-If #2 is true than severly retarded and small
infants wouldn't have rights or deserve protection
-Also wouldn't be wrong to torture animals for fun.
