Aristotle’s Virtue Theory
-Teleological explanation: an explanation in terms of purpose, function, goals.
There are good and bad examples of things based on how well they fulfill their function.
Good human=ability to reason.
To find something’s function/purpose figure out what it does best or it’s characteristic activity.
“Dysfunctional, Maladjusted”- people aren’t operating the way they are supposed to, to fit into society and fulfill their function.
Eudaimonia= all things strive for success- which is fulfilling your nature.
Virtue is a quality that makes you successful & helps you fulfill your function.
Morally good= fulfill function
[we discussed the golden mean scale...see book]
Pride~Greek view is different from the Christian view...
Greek=pride is a virtue and humility a vice. Opposite of Christianity.
You should be proud and brag, but not exaggerate or be modest.
Ideal life= life of the aristocratic intellectual.
The life of pleasure is not the best life, it’s ok but doesn’t really fulfill your purpose, your not really using your ability to reason. Wealth, friends, good looks, health are necessary but not sufficient for a good life...you need an intellectual life to fulfill your role as a rational being.
