I'm glad that the text addressed Freud
because I am also taking a psychology
course and it coincides nicely. In my
opinion, Freud is probably one of the
most pessimistic thinkers ever. Some of
his stuff definitely makes sense, such as
unconcious motives and regression.
However, I simply do not agree with his
fundamental premise of human nature
being ultimately depressing and not
worth trying to improve. His view of
religion seems so arrogant and elitist.
He says that religion is for weaklings, for
people who need delusions to
accompany them into the harshness of
the world. I find it hard to believe that
Freud was even considered to be a
psychologist who investigates the
majority of humans. It seems that he
might have thought of himself as too far
above all the rest. Anyway...
