Some people look to God because they find themselves somewhere in a world among billions of people, phenomena of birth, life, growing, etc, which can be overwhelming. There has to be something greater, bigger then ourselves. It gives them a sense of inner peace, an identity, a belonging. But I myself, do not believe that their is a man in the sky looking down on me and everyone else in the world, blessing me, testing me, and punishing me. However, I do believe that if we did not have religion, if we did not have a constant threat over our heads of eternal hell, our world would be even more chaotic then it already is. Religion has set the moral ground in all cultures. If people could only see in themselves what they see in God, we would not need to look to an almighty man in the sky, we could look to our family, and ourselves. But many are unable to hold themselves accountable or the environment around them accountable, so either they look to god or they fall into depression. It can be said that because so many have lost their commitment to religion, there is such a rise of those who suffer from depression.
