I have a few thoughts on the subject of
immortality. I think that immortality is a
fascinating subject. There is so much to
debate, fantasize, imagine, dream, etc.
There is no reason why we can't be
interested in the subject, but I also think
that there is an underlying theme that
bothers me. First, I think that we all need
to be more understanding and accepting
of the process of death. Why is it that
death is such a bad thing? As Socrates
said, it is irrational to think of death
negatively. I think that some people are
so obsessed with avoiding death that
they spend their actual lives doing
everything involved in preventing it. We
need, as a society, to accept death as
real and inevitable. Also, I think that
American society, especially, is so
anti-aging that we have grown into people
who don't respect and take care of our
elders as we should. In other societies,
the elderly are seen as wise and
all-knowing. In America, we tend to see
the elderly as incapable and helpless.
We have serious problems with our
conceptions of aging and death. Why do
they have to be such bad things?
