The material reads "If determinism were true, it seems difficult to explain the phenomena of regret." This got me to thinking about why people regret things they can't change. In an old conversation with my aunt, she had mentioned that people carry guilts and regrets about things they had no control over because it allows them to feel as if they had at least a small amount of power over the situation. In the case of many rape victims, they try to blame themselves and think things like, 'well, I shouldn't have worn that,' or 'I shouldn't have been walking there,' etc. etc. by using this line of thinking, they give themselves a sense of power in a powerless situation. if determinism were true, this is how i would describe the phenomena of regret.
