"I was baptized as a Mormon because I felt something in my heart/soul each time I met with the missionaries or prayed. But one year after having to obey the "rules", I went inactive. I don't believe God doesn't want me to drink caffeine. I don't believe I have to spend three hours in church each Sunday just to prove my devotion. And I don't believe that I have to "save" each member of my family to live together in the celestial heavens. Being inactive doesn't mean I don't believe in God."
I am totally with you on this. No offense to anyone who attends church regularly, but I stopped going years ago because I was tired of being preached at and told I had to believe this and that in order to go to Heaven. Not all churches are this way I am sure, but I guess I got the bad luck. I decided it was better to worship God in my own way (I jokingly call it 'Allie-ism').
I am not sure I would call myself 'inactive', really. I just don't stick to the "one religion and one religion only" mentality. Today I visited a Buddhist Sunday service for my Religions of India class, and it was quite a memorable experience. I love learning about and studying all kinds of different religions. Some of my devout Christian friends are not happy about my decision to participate in the worship rituals of other religions, mostly because they think I am being disloyal to God. In my opinion, I am taking my life, given to me by the higher power, and enriching it.
As to whether or not God actually exists, I believe 100% that there is a higher power. I call Him God because I was raised a Christian. But I also believe that the higer power is too big for one religion. Today, I prayed to, chanted for, offered gifts to, and worshipped Buddha. And I loved it.
