Who’s on First, What’s on Second?
Monism - Only one reality - Mine
Dualism – Two forms of reality – My conscious and my unconscious
Pluralism – Reality is composed of many different things – Me, myself and I have all the answers I need within, IF could just get the mind to shut up and listen to itself.
Nihilism – NOTHING is real – Oh well. I guess I am wrong
I laughed out loud when Mary Riggs posts “I am perplexed at why someone would want to sit around and ask questions about questions about other questions that cannot be answered.”?
Because it is what we have been doing in this human body since the beginning of time. They all get “answered”; they just get questioned again that’s all!
Now, I have to tell you what I really think about this chapter.
First, can I tell you all that I have had the wonderful experience of spending the last year taking care of the my surrogate Mother. She was the first women professor from the University of California. She won all kinds of awards and accomplishing many things. She was an incredible woman who had lived for 92 years. She was a mentor for me while I cared for her until she died the end of Dec. (one of the reasons it’s taken me so long to get going in this term in school, another death in the family end of Jan was the other reason) She talked a lot about molecular levels. She tried to get me to think about this fact all the time. She would say that EVERYTHING…EVERYTHING E V E R Y T H I N G was made up of the same stuff. Just in differing amounts. She would say that it is all broken down to one simple atom. This table, she would hit it…this pair of pants, she would tug on them, this window, knock knock…was made from the same molecular structure and we were all one big part of the same atom. Now, I have to tell you that I just could not imagine this. I thought it was the rambling of an old woman who had a screw loose. She definitely ascribed to Democritus theory of atomism
She would have loved discussing these things with me now. BUT, I still can’t get it! I have no answers.
I think I have more of a functionalism's view myself. It’s not one thing, but a system with several “things” working together. The question for me still remains.. What are the other things? Spiritual, physical, mental? Yes, some relationship between the physical and the mental …. I do have the love of wisdom so I forge forward and ask the question I just don’t answer myself…yet!.
