I am dissatisfied with the WebBoard for a number of reasons, the
clunkiness of the web interface, including the marking feature, the
inability to expland all the "threads" and see individual posts, and the
way it handles line breaks and butchers long hyperlinks.

As an email listserv it seems to work fine, but I've discovered that
many students prefer to read via the web, are not very technically savvy
and have trouble managing their email accounts. Next term I will be
moving to WebCT or some other format.

Have you considered using LCCs WEB CT server/format for this class? I'm
not terribly techno-savy, but having taken online classes in that
format, I find it to be much more convenient in many ways (the most
central example of which is that once you have read a post the board
marks it read for you, so you can start reading the new posts, leave to
do something else, come back and finish, without being confused as to
where you left off.)
