Idealism in the dictionary I use has two meanings. Number two is this- The tendency to see things as they should be. I know that in philosophy idealism is more then a definition it is a belief. However to someone who preaches idealism it seems to fit them just right to see things as they should be in their minds eye. I am strongly swayed by idealism, and would say I identify with that path of thought. Humes' theory that a mind is a "bundle of perceptions" fits in with other paths of study. Psychology, speech, and sociology classes that I have taken all teach knowledge of something is based on an individuals perceptions. I did disagree when Hume stated "we cannot know where these perceptions come from" I feel they came from living on the material plane. They come from experiences, and angles that each individual has in their lifetime. Most of us are so firmly living on the material plane that we cannot get a birds eye view of life. That leaves us with our own individual perceptions to determine the truths. The desire to search out a broader view is what prompted the first philosophers to begin the quest. Thus the birth of the natural philosophers. They wanted to replace mundane living with thought. To replace mythos with logos. Natural philosophers saw an underlying purpose to the "meaning of life", and sought a way to interpret it using our greatest asset reason. Rather then follow a habitual innate animal instinct like the rest of the animal populace humans are able to reason, and change the course of our destinies.
