Do you think that this the context of outside forces is the way that we identify ourselves OR is it that the outside forces help identify us?

For example, as a surgery scheduler in a doctor's office I am surrounded by medical beliefs. If you have a wound, you prescribe medication to heal it. This does not identify me because my beliefs are the opposite taught by family tradition of herbal remedies. So is it that the outside force identifies me or....?
