After reading and re-reading the assigned material this past week, I have come to understand why Philosophers of yesterday were often considered bonkers. LOL
It is simply amazing how many ways one single thing can be questioned.
And I thought I thought too much! HA!!
OK, my views, in case you are interested.
Socrates was a wise man. Ask yourself this… How many people do you know that have absolutely NO trouble admitting when they do not know something? Not many, I am betting. It takes a really self-assured person to admit they do not know something.
I think it’s a shame that the people were afraid of him. Yes, I believe they were afraid of him in some way. I think that is the root of most (note I did not say ALL) of the intolerance and hatred and such that goes on these days.
Guess it was not much different back then.
As to the Milgram study: I found it interesting that participants in the US were slightly less likely to continue giving higher voltage shocks than participants in other countries.
No other comment on it for now, just interesting. And the 85% in Germany wow! NO more beer for them!
Selflessness.
Wooohooo, that is a big can of worms.
I am often told by a close friend of mine that I need to think of myself more often (my family comes first – always has – always will). So when we decided to become roommates I said I would not live with a smoker. I made a promise to myself that I would not do that again and am not willing to budge. To me, this is my way of thinking of myself. My health. My future. (Notice I never said she had to quit, but a choice still had to be made.)
But to my friend, who was the one always telling me to think of myself more… it was the most selfish thing I could do.
She did quit by the way.
So. The point of this (yes I think there is one) is that even selflessness is so individualized and so personal, it is difficult to define much less have a human race agree on it.
Do I think there should be more selflessness? YES. Is it going to happen anytime soon? NO. I think we are in one of the biggest ME generations imaginable.
Which is why hate crimes are on the rise, again.
And war threats are all over the world.
Why can’t we all just get along? Sorry, had to throw that in.
Something else to ponder…
IF we all agreed, we would have no use for this class. What a tragedy that would be. It is fun to see all the differing views on the same topics.
