My take on that was that beliefs are "accessory" to fundamental existence - much like the tonsils or appendix. No matter what your belief system is and no matter how central it feels, you do not need it in a logical way as you need air to breathe and water to drink. Beliefs are expendable when you look at it from that point, since it is not something that you can pin down as absolutely fundamental for human existence.
