After reading Chapter 4, I happened to view a film with my family. This movie was based on near-death experiences. Applying what I learned, I was able to categorize the characters of the story. A doctor, who spoke scientifically about the experience, his view of the “light at the end of the tunnel” was only the interior workings of the eyes and nothing more. I would have to say this person is a monist, this experience, he says, of death is real, not hallucinations or an after-life, but reality of the end. On the other hand, there was a character, seeking an answer to the possibility of such an event and is there really life after death, was this proof of immortality, an answer to his dualism beliefs? Of course it was only a movie, and immortality did exist at the end. However in “real” life, who’s to say what happens. I find myself stuck between monism and dualism, I have somewhat strong beliefs, but the scientific answers can sound so logical, and persuading. This chapter was difficult for me to grasp the first time through, it just seemed as though the topics just ran together and I found myself getting too wrapped up in the examples, forgetting the “big picture.” Or is it just me?
