When you are using word pad or text pad, you might want to try putting "'s around your file name when saving.

ie choose "save as"
when you type the file name do "average.java" - depending on your settings your editor may be trying to add .txt at the end of the file. If you have extensions hidden, then it is possible you would not see it in a listing.

Try the quotes, see if that helps.
