We held the first BioBonds meeting Monday at noon, Jan 6, 2003, in Room
109. Persons who attended include Barb D., Jerry H., Gary M., Cliff
M., Brian N. and Bert P.
1. We viewed the new BioBonds web page, linked directly from the
Science web page, with links to generic biology syllabus, biology course
outline, and certain instructors. The Chemistry link is not currently
active.
2. For Biology, first-week-of-class materials have been put in bio
instructors' mail boxes, texts are in the bookstore, and the packet
should be in bookstore by Friday and is on-line. Chemistry books are
not in yet, and are listed as "recommended" rather than as "required".

3. Biologists have decided to move "meiosis" ahead, and delay study of
plasma membrane function until weeks 7 & 8, giving chemists more time to
cover basic organic chem.
4. We discussed regular meeting time. In order to choose a time, we
need feedback from Marie F. and Shelley G. We discussed how important
it is that BioBonds instructors actually attend BioBonds meetings, if we
feel that face to face communication is valuable. Reasons to meet are
to assure smooth correlation between paired bio & chem instructors, to
provide consistent instruction within chem and within bio, and to plan &
trouble-shoot week by week.
5. We discussed the need to clarify the idea of Chem 112 substituting
for Chem 104, the possibility of adding both time and credits to Chem
112 to make such an equivalence real, and how amazingly successful our
chemists have been at creating and recreating this hybrid course, and
that more success is on the way. It has been pointed out several times
that Chem 112 has drawn from the entire chem 104, 5 & 6 sequence,
reducing it from three 5-credit courses to one 3-credit course. Such
CREATIVITY!
6. We discussed assessment of BioBonds. Brian N. will visit Bio 112
classes, and offer comments. We want to determine just how well thi
BioBonds learning community is serving our A&P and other students.
