I also feel math is important for success in science but we need to be
careful not keep adding classes for students. I feel comfortable
strongly recommendiing Math 52 to take concurrently but hesitate to
require it in advance of BioBonds. I know the primary concern of
Family and Health Career faculty when we changed from 104 to Biobonds
was that the prerequisite could be completed in the same time frame
(i.e. one term). Since 52 is only strongly recommended for Ch 104 I do
not think it could be required for a Chemistry class that uses less
math.

Hi Vicky,

I'm certainly looking forward to meeting you and hearing your
perspective on things. The math prerequisite I've just circulated was a
consensus of those present, but with personal views ranging from no
prereq to Math 52 as a prerequisite.

I'm quite predictable about wanting more math, generally for everybody,
generally for everything. I repeated my student's comments about how
helpful Math 52 is for those who have taken it or are doing so
concurrently.

I find it interesting how often they say, "Oh, we've just done this in
Math 52", even without any specific intent of coordinating the two. I
am reminded by my peers at times that our goal here is preparation for
Anatomy and physiology.

I've been further reminded that other considerations, like student
success in Dosage Computation is someone else's concern, not ours.
Further, it was pointed out to me that not all nursing programs even
require any! chemistry in the student's backgrounds.

So, I have a lot to learn and some preconceptions to adjust to the new
realities of BioBonds as AP prereq instead of Chem 104 for all. Thank
