Compatibalism (soft determinism)-
agrees with determinism that all actions have a cause. agrees with libertarianism that we are free, therefor we are responsible for our actions. it redefines free will to make it compatible with determinism.

determinism = science- all actions have a cause.
libertarianism = morality- we are responsible for our actions

free will is doing what you want to do free from external compulsion.

in free acts the cause of the acts is some desire or reason belonging to the agent.

Calvinism- predestination- where is Gods justice? compatibalist style freedom, but not real libertarian freedom. no moral responsibility.

Theism is the belief in god.
Atheism is the belief that god doesn't exist.
Agnosticism is not knowing if god exists.

everyone falls into one of these categories.
some change their minds often.

There are 3 arguments for the existence of god.
1) Ontological argument
a priori argument (independent of experience). god exists by definition. if gods existence is possible, then it is actual.
Descartes version- god is a perfect being. existence is a perfection (it is more perfect to exist than not to exist). Therefore god exists. a perfect being must possess all perfections. therefore god must possess all perfections.

2) Cosmological argument
Tries to show that if every event has a cause, the universe must then have a cause.

3) Teleological argument (design argument)
The world is so ordered it couldn't have come about randomly, sop therefore it must have had an intelligent designer.
