You must turn in a total of 8 journal pages for the term; what is due for you on the 5th depends upon what you turned in last time.

Grading for 2nd midterm is as follows:
90+ = A
80+ = B
70+ = C
60+ = D
59- = F

Psychoanalytic Argument for Determinism:
1-Neurotic Behavior
2-Hypnosis
(Hospers, Freud)
Personality developed by age 5?
One does not have free will if this is true because one doesn't have control over how they develop by 5.
Unconscious motives drive behavior.

A bit of Freudian psychology:
~Id- instincts, subconscious, animal nature, primal desires; the id wants immediate gratification
~Superego-represses desires, neurotic consciousness, the "inner Hitler"
~Ego-diplomat, conscious awareness, mediates between id and superego

Rebuttals:
ex1- people that have extreme personality changes (introvert>extrovert)
ex2- people that change personality with different groups of people
3- ability/capacity/desire to change

~Criticisms of Psychoanalytic Argument:
1- people may be more free in areas in which they're not neurotic
ex: "normal" people that wash hands 10x/day
2- most of the time, explanations in terms of conscious intentions are adequate
ex: take the bishop in a chess game because you want to win, not because you hate going to church; ie, follow through with plans to achieve goals, no alternative motives

Argument from poor prediction in psychology
