Psychoanalytical Argument for Determinism: (Hospers, Freud)
1. Neurotic Behavior
2. Hypnosis
Basic point: your personality is developed by age five. before the age of 5, they are not making free will choices. only unconscious motives drive behavior.

Freud's 3 concepts-
*ID= emotions, pleasure, instincts, animal nature, primal desires..
*Superego= inner Hitler, oppresses desires
*Ego= diplomat, moderator between Id and Superego.

Class Discussion- is main personality really set by age 5? what about young children who are wild, then grow up to be cool, calm, and collected? are they just growing up or is theory wrong?------- Decided>>>>no set answer...

Critiscims of Psychoanalytical Argument:
1. maybe people are free in areas in which they are not neurotic.
2. most of the time explanations in terms of conscious intentions are adequate.

Libertarianism:
--Arg. from Regret: (William James)the fact that people regret things shows that there's free will.
--Arg. from poor prediction in psychology:
-unpredictable= random (tourettes syndrome)
-case studies provide unreliable data
-human beings are complex and diverse

Rebuttal from Determinism: it's a false belief in free will which causes regret
