There are apparently only three philosophies on free will.
They are

-Libertarianism - states that there are some free acts. We have the freedom to do what we want to a certain degree. It acknowledges our inability to do the physically impossible or logically impossible. Yet, it believes that we have the overall freedom to choose each action we make.

-Hard Determinism - states that there are NO free acts, all that we do is governed by our genetics, our upbringing, enculturation, conditioning and that we have no freewill. In both Hard Determinism and Libertarianism they believe that freewill is the power to have done otherwise in identical circumstance. The HD says in the exact circumstance people will always do what they are predisposed to do, while Libertarians say that each moment it is possible to behave in a myriad of ways and that people are constantly deciding which one to choose.

-Soft Determinism or compatabilism - is a bit of both, it is in line with determinism, in that it agrees that you are predisposed to behave a certain way, however it REDEFINES FREE WILL. Saying that free will is our ability to do what we enjoy or what we want to do.

We spent most of class discussing the various attributes of Hard D and LIB.

It seems that some people are convinced that how you grew up and the chemicals in your head make you what you are and that no matter how you shake it people are just the sum of their parts and their behavior is going to be in line with these factors. While others believe that each moment presents an array of options and choosing any of them is always possible.

If your mother is a crack whore and your dad is a junkie and your friends are thugs and you were born chemically addicted to crack than you will be a crack head, if no other option presents itself to you through your life, than you will be a crack head. If you are born in New Guinea in a tribe of bush people you are not going to suddenly decide to be a lawyer, unless the option is presented than perhaps if you aren't content being a crack head/aboriginal bush person.. you can be a lawyer, maybe the bush people weren't blood thirsty enough for you, so you decide to be a lawyer.

The HD would say that something in the way you were raised, or in the way your genetics course through your body makes you need to be a lawyer when the option occurs... or makes you never think of it until it occurs.

The Libertarians would assume that you have the choice to become a lawyer once it is physically available. That when things are physically possible, they are also mentally and realistically possible.

There are also some theological arguments for Determinism:
1. Religious/fate god's plan, Time relativity... meaning, God knows the past present and future because god is omnipotent, therefore what you are going to do, have done and are doing are pre ordained by the almighty and you are just a whizz bang cracker in his toy car zinging through the racetrack of reality, no control and no future.
2. This fits in with the argument for divine foreknowledge... God always knows what your gonna do because....ITS GOD and GOD already figured this stuff out.
