10/03/02- Thursday
Announcements: JOURNALS - The journal due date has been changed from the fifth week to the sixth week. Take this opportunity to go over what you have learned. There should not be more than one topic per page in your journal.
Example journal entries: Are mind and body different things and if so how do they interact? Or is the mind just an aspect of the body? If the same, why do they seem different?
Notes
The Mind-Body problem ( first philosophical question ).
(4) major theories of reality
1) Monism- the view that there is only one reality or only one kind of thing that is real. (pg. 113)
2) Dualism- the view that there are two forms of reality at two kinds of real things. (pg. 113)
3) Pluralism- Aristotle says things cannot be reduced to a being treated the same way.. The universe is more complex than reducing everything to one or two basic things. (pg. 146)
Descartes- "Contesian Interactionism" believed the following:
The mind and body causally interact in the brain (the pineal gland), humans have a body and soul and can feel pain, but animals have no body or soul and can't feel pain. Therefor experiments were done on animals assuming they had not felt pain.
Examples of the mind affects the body Examples of how the body affects the
mind
nausea, stress, placebo effect shock "pain"
Ontology with gravity, we don't know how it works, but experience tells us it does.
