Joshua 6-8:29 Invasion of Canaan- All the original people from Ex. Who lacked faith allowed to die off in desert, except Joshua and Caleb. They went to the promised land, they were young. The older people also died off.
Cities "devoted to destruction" another translation "cities put under the ban."
Cities put under the ban:
-burnt to the ground
-every living thing killed
-everything destroyed except gold/silver(vessels in bronze & iron) these valuables go in God’s treasury.
Justification
-worship false God’s, danger of religious contamination, especially with intermarriage (inter-faith marriage)
-God wants to keep the worshipping to him.
-Danger of political revolt
To do this he wants to wipe out the church, people and everything.
(Jericho was the 1st city, Canaan is the general geographic location of where Israel is located)
There are some parallels to genocide in the Modern world and this story ex: Indians pressured to convert to Christianity and go to school and become "civilized" when the Europeans came to the Americas.
Canaan is eventually conquered.
Achan’s sin-hoarded loot belonging to God. (The city was under the ban so he couldn’t take it)
Result: he and his family were stoned to death & Israel loses the battle against Ai. Also 16 innocent people died. This ties back in with the blessings and curses from God we studied the other day.
Friday we will pick up on Judges. Also if you weren’t in class today we received a midterm study guide, and the midterm will be sometime next week!!
