If I may be so bold... I surmise from the
request for extra credit that some folks
didn't do as well on the first midterm as
they had hoped to, and the extra credit
assignment made me think about
different ways people study, and that
maybe someone can benefit from my
experience (180+ units -- too bad they
aren't the right ones for a bachelor's
degree ;)

The way I studied for the first midterm
was to write out (on the computer) the
answers to all of the study guide
questions (and anything else I thought
might be important). Then I went thru my
document and deleted everything that I
could remember without it having to be on
my notecard (e.g. Descartes was a
rationalist, Locke was an empiricist --
obviously those things will be different for
each person). What was left in the
document, I reduced to a 7 point font (very
tiny) and printed to fit a 5 x 6 inch space,
folded the printed paper in half and taped
it shut to become my 3x5 notecard.

Naturally it took a few hours to do this (not
counting all the time spent reading, of
course) and it took some effort. But I
couldn't be more pleased with my score
on the first midterm, so for me it was
worth it. I do this sort of thing in all my
classes -- even tho it's rare to be allowed
a note card, and many profs don't give
study guides, for me it's really helpful to
actually write out answers to potential
questions, not just think about them.
